Chairman of the Board of Directors of Van Thinh Phat Group said "accepting fate"

On October 11, the trial of defendant Truong My Lan and 33 accomplices on charges of "fraudulent appropriation of property", "money laundering", and "illegally transporting currency across borders" ended its debate. Before entering the deliberation, the defendants had their final words.

As the first to speak, Ms. Truong My Lan pledged to focus on overcoming the consequences, especially for the tens of thousands of people affected.

In her confession, Truong My Lan said that the price she had to pay was too high and that this was part of her destiny, an “occupational accident”. The defendant expressed her pain that the name Truong My Lan had affected hundreds of families. But she also said that she was a “lowly citizen”, hoping for a fair and objective consideration from the jury.

Ms. Lan talked about three big dreams in her life that she had not yet realized. They were to build an international general hospital, build social housing and build schools for the poor. However, fate prevented her from completing these plans.

During the Covid-19 pandemic alone, she contributed to the purchase of 25 million doses of vaccine and supported the government in purchasing an additional 25 million doses, for a total of 50 million doses. However, she never considered this a personal achievement that needed to be celebrated.

Finally, Ms. Lan asked the panel of judges to reduce the sentence for her husband (defendant Chu Lap Co), her niece (defendant Truong Hue Van) and her sister-in-law (defendant Ngo Thanh Nha). In particular, she wanted defendant Nha to be released on bail to continue building an international general hospital in Binh Chanh district. She also wanted the remaining defendants to receive the lightest possible sentences.

The court deliberated for a long time and is expected to give its verdict on the morning of October 17.
