Information from the City Children's Hospital (HCMC) on May 14 said that this unit had just received and treated a rare and dangerous case of severe allergy.
Taking the medical history, the family said that two days after eating crab, the boy developed a rash all over his body and red conjunctiva, slightly swollen lips, taking local anti-allergy medicine did not help, the condition became more and more serious.
The very next day, the baby's lips and oral mucosa began to blister all over the mouth. The next day, the baby's nasal cavity and genitals began to ulcerate. The doctor concluded that the baby had Steven Johnson syndrome and transferred him directly to the City Children's Hospital. Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a severe skin hypersensitivity reaction characterized by ulcers in natural orifices of the body such as the eyes, nose, mouth, throat, urinary tract, etc.
At the City Children's Hospital, the patient had progressive ulcers and swelling in natural body orifices such as the lips, nose, ear canals, private areas, armpits, groin... The child had difficulty breathing and had skin infections and systemic sepsis, so he was supported with a ventilator, antibiotics, intravenous immunoglobulin, and care for the skin, mucous membranes, eyes, and genitals with absolute sterility.
The baby had a rash with itchy pimples all over his body, making it impossible for him to sleep; conjunctivitis, which caused vision loss and the membranes that prevented him from opening his eyes. The swelling and ulcers in his lips and mouth prevented him from eating and drinking, requiring him to be fed porridge and milk through a nasogastric tube six times a day. The nasal ulcers made it difficult for him to breathe because the ulcer fluid dried up. The baby's lips and eyes stuck together, making it difficult to clean.
Baby T. gradually recovered after treatment.
Despite many difficulties, thanks to timely consultation from the team of Ophthalmology, Urology, Dermatology, Orthopedics, and Rehabilitation, the doctors of the Intensive Care - Anti-Poison Department have gradually controlled the infection, restored dry skin, skillfully pulled new skin, and especially gradually improved the baby's 5 senses.
Today, the baby can breathe freely, his nose is less runny and he can scoop porridge to eat by himself.
