The project to build a breakwater at Vung Ang Port, Ha Tinh (phase 2) when completed will shield waves during monsoon conditions, minimizing the impact of waves during storms for wharfs 1 and 2 of Vung Ang Port.

The Maritime Project Management Board has just proposed the Ministry of Transport to consider and approve the investment policy for the Vung Ang Port Breakwater Construction Investment Project, Ha Tinh (Phase 2) including the breakwater system (Phase 2) and the renovation and upgrading of the Vung Ang navigation channel for ships up to 50,000DWT.

The project includes two main items: extending the existing breakwater (260 m long) by 300 m to ensure wave protection as well as to meet the exploitation requirements for ports in the Vung Ang wharf area (wharfs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) and dredging the Vung Ang maritime route from the beginning of the route to the end of the Vung Ang port turning basin for fully loaded 50,000 DWT ships.

According to preliminary calculations, the total investment for this Project is 937 billion VND, invested by the State budget with the implementation period from 2024 to 2025.

The Maritime Project Management Board said that Vung Ang port area has a favorable geographical location in Vung Ang Economic Zone, where many projects are currently being invested, located on the corridor of international shipping routes, along with great natural depth, so it is very favorable for the formation of large deep-water ports in the region.

In addition, with the main attractive areas being Ha Tinh province, part of Quang Binh province, Southern Laos, Northeast Thailand and neighboring areas, the investment in the breakwater system (phase 2) and the renovation and upgrading of the Vung Ang maritime route for ships up to 50,000 DWT will create a solid foundation for infrastructure, attracting more large shipping lines, international shipping lines as well as investors to the Vung Ang Economic Zone.

Currently, projects of berths 3 and 4 are being completed and about to come into operation, berths 5 and 6 are being accelerated in construction, so ensuring the channel depth conditions for large tonnage ships to enter/exit to load cargo conveniently as well as ensuring quiet conditions during operation for these berths is really necessary.

Investing in the breakwater system (phase 2) and renovating and upgrading the Vung Ang maritime route for ships up to 50,000 DWT will minimize port damage due to having to stop operations, enhance safety in port operations at existing berths 1 and 2, and ensure the requirements for water quietness in operations for berths 3, 4, 5, 6 under construction and berths 7 and 8 in the future.
