Trying hard to take care of mother

I am Vuong Thuy Lan, grew up in a family of 2 brothers in Zhejiang, China. My parents were civil servants so our economic conditions were only at an average level. Luckily, my family always believed that only education could change our lives. So my parents created the best conditions for my 2 brothers to study.

I always tried my best, I never made my parents worry about my studies. On the contrary, my brother was naughty since childhood and did not focus on studying. After finishing secondary school, he dropped out and chose to work with some neighbors. Although my parents did not want this, they could not stop him.

Time passed, I went to college and settled down in the city. Just 2 years later, I got married and had my own family. Meanwhile, my brother chose to live alone, wandering around the cities to make a living but still unstable.

Several times, I tried to persuade him to return to the countryside, where it would be easier to make a living and he could take care of his parents. But he refused. Because of worrying about their son, my parents aged faster than their time. They were always sad and worried.

Until early 2018, my father passed away. Seeing my mother alone in the countryside, I took her to the city to live with me. Luckily, my husband is a sensible person, so he always supports me in taking care of my mother.

After 2 months at my house, my mother wanted to go back to her hometown. Because life in the city made her feel lonely due to the lack of close friends and neighbors. There was no other way, so my husband and I had to arrange our work to bring her back.

After staying with my mother for a few more days, my husband and I returned to the city to continue our work. Just 2 weeks later, I unexpectedly received a phone call from the old lady next door. She told me that my mother had slipped and fallen in the bathroom and was in the emergency room. I immediately drove back from the city that night.

After that fall, my mother’s health gradually declined. She could no longer take care of herself and needed help. At first, my husband and I planned to hire a nanny. However, these people came and only worked for a short time and then quit.

Having no other choice, I decided to quit my current job to return home to take care of my mother. During the period from 2019 until the beginning of this year, my husband and I supported each other to take the best care of my mother.

Because we lost a source of income, our family's finances were even more difficult than before. However, we still tried to make sure that my mother did not lack anything.

I texted him many times to tell him about my mother’s situation, also hoping he could help. But every time, he texted me only one sentence: “I don’t have money, when I have money I will send it to you”.

Not only has a savings book worth 4,000 NDT

Time flies. After a long battle with illness, my mother passed away. Before leaving, she was still conscious enough to give instructions to her children and grandchildren and to hand over her will, which she had made 3 years ago.

After opening the will, I was quite surprised by the content inside. Accordingly, my mother left the entire current house to my brother. The only thing my mother wrote in the will for me was a savings book worth 4,000 NDT (more than 10 million VND).

I felt a little sad and hurt, but I respected my mother's decision so I didn't think much about it. I quietly completed the procedures to receive the property and returned to the city.

Until last April, I had to go to the bank in my hometown to settle some matters. I was surprised when the teller informed me that I was the beneficiary of two savings books, including one worth 4,000 NDT as my mother had written in her will, and another worth 500,000 NDT (about 1.7 billion VND). When I asked for more details, the bank employee said that my mother had created these two books and wanted to give them to me.

Only then did I realize that my mother truly loved us both equally. She understood the efforts of my husband and I and did not want her children to suffer any loss. However, when I read the will, I was a little disappointed in her.
