A woman in Sichuan province has been criticized by netizens after she insisted on asking her former colleague to return the 400 yuan wedding gift.

"When he got married, I celebrated his wedding, so now I have to invite him to my wedding," Huang said. "But he didn't come."

After texting his former colleague to ask why he didn’t attend the wedding, Huang asked him to return the 400 yuan (US$55) gift money. However, the man did not reply.

The man later said he did not attend the wedding because he thought the invitation was fake, but Huang did not accept this explanation. "You should return the wedding gift money. Everything is give and take. You can not attend the wedding but you should still send the wedding gift money," Huang said.

But the male colleague still did not return the money. When the story was posted on social media, it attracted 210,000 views and nearly 5,000 comments. However, most netizens thought that Huang was being disrespectful.

"Taking back the wedding gift money really turned her self-esteem into dust," one commenter said.

"Giving money as a wedding gift is to bless others. Is it necessary to ask for the blessing back?" another person said.

It is a Chinese tradition to give red envelopes filled with wedding money to newlyweds. Last August, four men exchanged a 42kg bag of coins they had saved for 6,888 yuan ($940) to give to their best friend, the groom, as a gift on their big day.
