With this change from Riot, MSI will become a more attractive and competitive tournament. Previously, this tournament was only considered a favorite tournament of LPL because it was not taken seriously by other regions.
JDG wins MSI 2023
For example, in MSI 2023, JDG will secure a ticket to Worlds, and the LPL region will have a total of 4 spots at Worlds. At the same time, the second best region - LCK in MSI 2023 - will have 1 more spot at Worlds 2023, for a total of 4.
However, to reach the World Championship, the MSI champion team still has to compete in the domestic league and at least win a ticket to the playoffs of their region (except LEC). Thus, if they do not compete in a centralized tournament, the ticket to go straight to the 2024 World Championship will be canceled immediately and that region will have the same number of participating slots as before.
Riot also announced that in the 2024 season, they will award 3 World Championship slots to the LEC, LCS, LCK, and LPL regions. PCS and VCS will each receive 2 slots, LLA and CBLOL will each receive 1 slot at World Championship.
Faker and his teammates won the 2023 World Championship
This new rule will make the MSI tournament more attractive than ever, other regions such as LCK, LEC or LCS will invest more for an early ticket to this CKTG. Then LPL will have to show more for the upcoming MSI season.
The competition time for the Summer season is also specifically determined by Riot as follows:
LEC: January 13
LLA: January 16
LCK: January 17
PCS: January 19
LCS: January 20
VCS: January 20
CBLOL: January 20
LPL: January 15
