In Binh Ninh commune, one of the key coconut growing areas of Dong Thap province, raw dry coconuts are being purchased by traders at the garden at a price of 160,000 - 180,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits).
According to some traders, the price of dried coconut has remained high recently due to the strong increase in demand from export markets. At the same time, the domestic market also needs a large amount of dried coconut to serve the production and processing of cakes and candies for the Lunar New Year 2026.
Mr. Nguyen Van Met Sau in Binh Ninh commune, Dong Thap province has just harvested 0.7 hectares of dry coconuts with 760 fruits, sold for 170 thousand VND/dozen (12 fruits), earning a profit of more than 9 million VND.
Mr. Sau said that the price of raw coconut is currently stable, bringing high income to his family. In addition, many traders and companies from neighboring localities also come to visit and survey the quality of his coconut garden.
According to Mr. Sau, when the price of coconut is stable, farmers will have enough capital to invest in fertilizing and taking care of their gardens. This will lead to an increase in productivity in the following months.
According to information from the Economic Department of Binh Ninh Commune, Dong Thap Province, the area of coconut cultivation in the commune is 2,626 hectares. Identifying coconut as one of the main crops of the locality, Binh Ninh Commune encourages farmers to change their habits and widely apply intensive agricultural science and technology. Among them, the focus is on instructions on organic coconut growing processes, using fertilizers and biological pesticides in the permitted list, keeping a farming diary, not using banned substances and ensuring quarantine time... Encouraging the application of science and technology in intensive farming has helped increase local coconut productivity from 22 tons/ha/year in the past to 24 tons/ha/year at present.
Dong Thap province currently has more than 21,654 hectares of coconut, with a fruit-bearing area of 18,116 hectares, a yield of 13.5 tons/hectare, and an output of 244,115 tons/year. Since 2015, the coconut area has increased by 5,749 hectares, with an average growth rate of 4.5%/year.
According to statistics, when coconut trees enter the stable harvest stage, coconut growers earn an average profit of about 91.2 million VND/ha/year.
To exploit the development potential of coconut trees, in the coming time, Dong Thap province will continue to promote the issuance of growing area codes and packaging facility codes, in order to meet the requirements of traceability, especially for exported agricultural products. In addition, the provincial agricultural sector aims to continue implementing value chain linkages between production and consumption, building cooperatives and cooperative groups, strengthening supply-demand connections, promoting trade, thereby creating favorable conditions for product consumption and stabilizing farmers' income.
