On February 2, Quang Nam Central General Hospital said that hospital doctors had saved the life of a male patient who suffered a wound caused by a wire object that pierced his chest 10cm, puncturing his lung while cutting grass.

Accordingly, on January 25, a male patient named VA (61 years old, residing in Binh Son district, Quang Ngai) was admitted to the emergency room of Quang Nam Central General Hospital in a state of writhing, clutching his chest, having difficulty breathing with a foreign object identified as a large diameter, plastic-coated wire, often used to make fences, 20cm long, penetrating the chest about 10cm.

According to information from his family, Mr. A. was cutting grass with a machine in his neighbor's garden when a strange object pierced his body, through two layers of his jacket, and into his right chest.

The patient had a CT scan and found that the wire had penetrated the right lung, there was a lot of bleeding, and the lung tissue around the puncture showed signs of bruising and hematoma.

The patient was consulted for emergency surgery, thoracoscopy to explore the head of the foreign body, controlled removal of the foreign body, hemostasis, irrigation and drainage of the pleural cavity.

After a week of surgery and treatment, the patient is completely stable and can walk on his own. The hospital is expected to discharge the patient on February 3.

Dr. Duong Chi Luc, Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Quang Nam Central General Hospital, recommends that for foreign objects in the chest wall that penetrate the lung parenchyma, the most common symptoms are pain, pain that increases when breathing, bleeding causing acute blood loss, and pneumothorax causing respiratory failure.

Therefore, first aid is needed, quickly cover the wound, find a way to fix the foreign object, do not pull it out, clear the airway, give artificial respiration if necessary and quickly take the victim to the nearest medical facility.
