EU uses common arms procurement budget for first time, prioritizing Ukraine

The European Union (EU) has made history by using its budget for the first time to finance joint arms purchases among member states, with the bulk of the supplies going to Ukraine.

In an announcement on November 14, Vice President of the European Commission (EC) Margrethe Vestager emphasized that this is the first time the EU has used its budget to support member states in purchasing weapons in a common form, instead of through temporary financial instruments as before.

The EU has invested 300 million euros in the initiative, supporting some 20 member states in purchasing air defense equipment, armored vehicles and ammunition.

Most of these weapons will be sent to Ukraine, which is currently in a state of tense conflict.

Since the outbreak of the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the EU has made many efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and support Ukraine.

To boost ammunition supplies to Kiev, the EU has set up a financial support mechanism to help member states accelerate ammunition purchases, pledging to supply at least one million artillery shells to Ukraine by March 2024.

Although the EU has yet to meet this target, Josep Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has pledged that all ammunition will be delivered to Ukraine this year.
