Urgent reform of Vietnamese athletics

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/11/2023

The 2023 National Athletics Championship has just ended in Hanoi , concluding a busy year for Vietnamese athletics but with a gloomy color due to the lack of breakthrough achievements, and the lack of new talents. Not to mention, after this tournament, a series of pillars such as Nguyen Thi Huyen (400 m, 400 m hurdles), Bui Thi Thu Thao (long jump), Nguyen Van Lai (5,000 m, 10,000 m) are no longer wearing the national team jersey.

Vietnamese athletics needs more excellent athletes (from left to right) such as: Hong Le, Nguyen Thi Oanh and Le Thi Tuyet

At the 32nd SEA Games in May in Cambodia, Vietnam's athletics won only 12 gold medals, being surpassed by Thailand after 3 consecutive SEA Games. At the 19th ASIAD, Vietnam's athletics disappointed with not winning a single medal. Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, in charge of the athletics department of the Sports and Physical Training Department and General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation, frankly admitted that Vietnam's athletics performance is declining and that drastic reforms are needed in the near future.

Young athlete Le Thi Tuyet

Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung said that it is expected that by the end of this year, the Athletics Department and the Vietnam Athletics Federation will organize a conference to discuss solutions to reform Vietnam's athletics. Experts, managers, local coaches and those passionate about Vietnam's athletics will be invited to attend the "Dien Hong Conference" to thoroughly analyze the current situation and discuss solutions to overcome difficulties for Vietnam's athletics. "Hot issues such as training and investment for national and youth athletes, hiring foreign experts, focusing on investment and training for key athletes will be discussed to find the best solution in the current context of Vietnam's athletics," Mr. Hung emphasized.

Talented Nhi Yen (316) needs strong investment

Vietnam athletics has been struggling to build its force in recent years. The lack of experts for key groups since the 31st SEA Games has caused the athletes to decline. Concentrating with many groups in many localities also has its limitations. The "your army, my army" when joining the national team is also considered a barrier, requiring a thorough solution.

NEED TO INVEST HEAVYLY IN YOUNG TALENTS

Tran Thi Nhi Yen (18 years old) dominated the 100m and 200m national short distance events and won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal at the 32nd SEA Games for the first time. If invested in the right direction, the girl from Long An promises to go far. Athlete Le Thi Tuyet (19 years old) is less than 1.5m tall and weighs 38kg. She won a silver medal in the marathon for the first time at the 32nd SEA Games.

Vietnam's athletics still has a few promising young faces such as 20-year-old athlete Kim Thi Huyen ( Tra Vinh ) who just broke the national record in women's shot put, Hoang Thanh Giang (22 years old, Hai Phong) who defeated senior Bui Thi Thu Thao in the long jump, Nguyen Duc Son (23 years old, Hanoi) who surpassed senior Quach Cong Lich. These are the faces that will become the pillars of the athletics team in the future and must be quickly and strongly invested.
