The Ho Chi Minh City derby between Ho Chi Minh City Police and Becamex Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of September 21 at Go Dau Stadium witnessed dramatic and emotional developments, especially surrounding striker Nguyen Tien Linh.
Once a symbol of Becamex Binh Duong (formerly Becamex HCMC), Tien Linh now faces his old team in the HCMC Police uniform. This is not only a confrontation between two teams from the same city but also an emotional reunion, when Tien Linh must perform the task of scoring against the team that nurtured his talent and helped him win the 2024 Vietnam Golden Ball.
In the 7th minute, Tien Linh opened the score for Ho Chi Minh City Police with a classy header from Makrillos' cross. However, amid the cheers of his teammates and fans, the striker refused to celebrate and clasped his hands towards the home team's fans, showing respect to his former team.
In the 37th minute, Raphael of Ho Chi Minh City Police put the ball into the net of Becamex Ho Chi Minh City but the goal was not recognized after VAR intervened to determine an offside error. The first half ended with a score of 1-0 in favor of Ho Chi Minh City Police.
In the second half, the drama continued to be pushed up. In the 47th minute, from a corner kick of Becamex TPHCM, Anh Van headed the ball low. The ball hit Tien Linh, accidentally making him the "sinner" with an own goal, equalizing 1-1 for Becamex TPHCM.
After conceding the goal, Ho Chi Minh City Police raised their attack formation to regain the lead. Becamex Ho Chi Minh City also tried to attack but could not penetrate the defense of coach Huynh Duc's team.
In the 59th minute, Nguyen Thai Quoc Cuong coordinated well with foreign player Schorr, unleashing a powerful left-footed shot to the far corner, raising the score to 2-1 for Ho Chi Minh City Police.
Not stopping there, Ho Chi Minh City Police continued to put pressure. In the 82nd minute, substitute player Van Binh received a high pass from his teammate and finished with a technical shot to set the score at 3-1 for Ho Chi Minh City Police.
With this victory, coach Le Huynh Duc and his team rose to second place on the rankings with 10 points after 5 rounds, close to the top group.
Meanwhile, Becamex HCMC continues to sink deeper into crisis with its third consecutive defeat under coach Anh Duc, ranking 10th on the rankings.
