ST25 rice price increases 'terribly'

On September 5, Labor Hero Ho Quang Cua - the "father" of ST25 rice said - farmers in the West are currently entering the summer-autumn rice harvest season. Compared to the same period last year, the price of summer-autumn rice this year has increased sharply, helping farmers increase their income significantly, so people are very excited.

Among them, ST25 rice has increased in price the most "terribly". "The price of ST25 rice this crop has never been so high. Currently, farmers are selling it for 11,000 VND/kg, an increase of over 3,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year. Although the price of ST25 rice has increased a lot, my business still controls the price of rice to keep customers," Mr. Cua informed.

Mr. Huynh Van Giai (Long Duc commune, Long Phu district, Soc Trang province) - said that he had just harvested 1 hectare of ST25 rice. This year, thanks to the application of new farming techniques, Mr. Giai was able to significantly reduce costs.

"ST25 rice yield is quite high, over 7 tons/ha. Enterprises buy at the field at nearly 11,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, I still have a profit of over 50 million VND. This is the highest profit ever," said Mr. Giai.

According to Mr. Ho Quang Cua, the reason why the price of ST25 rice has been sky-high in recent days is because, in addition to the demand from customers who are used to eating this fragrant rice variety, there is also the factor that people and businesses are collecting it to make rice seeds to supply for the upcoming winter-spring crop with a selling price of about 24,000 VND/kg.

"This should not be done, it affects the quality and reputation of Vietnamese rice. We hope that localities and authorities will inspect and strictly handle the situation of counterfeiting ST25 rice variety," said Mr. Cua.
