On September 30, the Department of Construction of Lam Dong province said that after fixing landslides on some mountain passes leading into Lam Dong province, authorities are still on duty to monitor and minimize risks caused by landslides.

Risk of landslides on mountain passes to Lam Dong

Previously, on the afternoon of September 28, on Bao Loc pass (National Highway 20, section through Lam Dong), a landslide occurred on the positive slope of more than 6m long, with rocks, soil and bushes spilling onto the road surface, blocking the drainage ditch in the direction from Da Lat to Ho Chi Minh City.

The incident did not cause any casualties but increased the safety risk for people and vehicles passing through the pass.

After removing about 200 cubic meters of earth and rock, authorities inspected the landslide situation on this important pass.

According to Bao Loc Road Management Department 2.3, after inspection, the landslide point on Bao Loc pass has many dangerous cracks, with the risk of continuing to slide at any time.

A representative of the Traffic Police Department of Lam Dong Province Police said that the recent rain was not as extreme as previous years, but many small landslides continuously appeared, causing traffic disruption.

Most worryingly, small landslides on Bao Loc pass can "trigger" large landslides, or cause unfortunate incidents.

Concerns of drivers and pedestrians

Driver Dang Hoang Lam (specializing in transporting agricultural products on the Da Lat - Ho Chi Minh City route) shared: "The vehicle is heavily loaded, so it is not convenient to turn to other mountain passes to go to Ho Chi Minh City, so we have to stick to Bao Loc Pass. Unfortunately, heavy rain on the pass makes us feel uneasy, water pours down the road, sometimes rocks and soil rise down, which is very dangerous. This mountain pass has the characteristic of a deep abyss on one side and a high cliff on the other."

Previously, during the prolonged rains at the end of July 2025, a tree on the slope of Bao Loc Pass fell onto the road and crushed a moving car. The incident injured a driver. Bao Loc Pass was blocked for many hours.

Similarly, Gia Bac Pass (National Highway 28, Lam Dong Province) is also in a state of landslides that were "activated" in heavy rain, after a serious landslide occurred on the morning of September 28.

According to records, rainwater eroded the downstream of the horizontal culvert, causing the negative slope to collapse. In particular, the soil at the bottom of the retaining wall collapsed, creating a frog-like shape about 15m long and 10m deep along the foot of the retaining wall, directly threatening the foundation and road surface.

Lam Dong Province Department of Construction assessed that the current road condition in this area is at risk of collapse and traffic safety loss if heavy rain continues.

The Department has directed the Lam Dong Road Maintenance Management Board to coordinate with functional units to deploy many emergency measures, and at the same time reinforce the downstream with earthen bags and stone cages to stabilize the slope. Currently, monitoring and rescue work is still being carried out continuously.

Highway 28B upgrade project behind schedule

The project to upgrade and expand National Highway 28B connecting National Highway 20 with the Phan Thiet - Dau Giay Expressway and connecting the Da Lat area with Phan Thiet has been behind schedule due to many problems.

According to the assessment of the leaders of the Lam Dong Department of Construction, the contractor has not yet added machinery, equipment and human resources to complete the construction. The spread out construction, combined with the stormy weather, not only affects the quality of the project but also increases the risk of traffic safety on the route.

In a recent survey, Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee Vo Ngoc Hiep said bluntly that the contractor's implementation did not meet the requirements.

Currently, the contractor of the above project says it is working "in a rolling manner", but in fact, vehicles and equipment are lacking, making implementation slow.
