Decoding why young people without heart disease suddenly have strokes

Stroke is currently one of the leading causes of death in the world. In recent years, the number of people suffering from stroke has been increasing, especially young people.

In a study recently published in the scientific journal Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases , experts have found the cause of stroke and, at the same time, predicted the risk of stroke early.

What did the researchers find?

The research team from Central South University and Nanchang Medical University (China) used data from more than 22,615 participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) over 19 years.

Participants had their waist circumference and weight measured, and blood drawn for blood sugar and lipid tests. The authors then calculated a TyG-WWI score for each person and compared it with stroke status.

The results found that people with higher TyG-WWI index had greater risk of stroke.

The TyG-WWI index is a composite of four factors:

  • Blood fat (triglyceride).
  • Blood sugar.
  • Weight.
  • Waist

Researchers wanted to assess the association between the TyG-WWI score and stroke risk in adults in the community.

The results found that people with higher TyG-WWI scores had a greater risk of stroke, according to the health news site Eating Well .

Without adjusting for any other factors, people with high TyG-WWI had a 65% increased risk of stroke. Adjusting for age and sex, the risk increased by 24%. After adjusting for all relevant factors, the risk remained 15%.

Notably, those with the highest TyG-WWI score had a 38% higher risk of stroke than those in the lowest group.

Notably, this link was more pronounced in younger people and those without coronary heart disease, according to Eating Well.

This means that people who are overweight, have belly fat, high blood fat, and high blood sugar will have a higher risk of stroke, even at a young age.

Researchers note that the TyG-WWI is a useful tool for predicting stroke risk early, especially in people who have no symptoms. Monitoring blood lipids, blood sugar, weight, and waist circumference can help doctors intervene promptly by changing diet, exercise, or medication if needed, thereby preventing stroke more effectively.
