It is expected that the 2025 high school graduation exam will have many new points compared to the exam from 2024 and earlier, such as adding 2 new subjects; adding many multiple choice test formats... However, the exam organization plan is compact, reducing pressure.

Many adjustments, students need to take note immediately
The 2025 high school graduation exam is the first graduation exam for students studying the new curriculum and textbooks compiled according to the 2018 General Education Program. Therefore, the draft regulations for the new high school graduation exam have many adjustments compared to the high school graduation exam from 2024 and earlier.
According to the draft, the 2025 high school graduation exam will have two more subjects: information technology and technology. Thus, the exam will have a total of 11 subjects, including: Math, literature, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economic and legal education, information technology, technology, foreign languages (English, German, Russian, Japanese, French, Chinese and Korean).
Regarding the exam format, only the literature subject will be tested in the essay format, the remaining subjects will be tested in the objective multiple choice format. Director of the Department of Quality Management ( Ministry of Education and Training ) Huynh Van Chuong shared that the difference in the multiple choice tests in the 2025 high school graduation exam is that in addition to the multiple choice question format (4 options, choose 1), which has been familiar to students and has been applied for many years, there will be 2 new multiple choice question formats. In which, the first format includes true/false multiple choice questions (each question has 4 options, students must answer true/false for each idea of the question); the second format is short answer multiple choice questions (similar to the essay format, students fill in the answer on the form). The time for the literature test is 120 minutes, for math 90 minutes, and for the remaining subjects 50 minutes/subject.
A notable new point in the draft is the regulation on increasing the rate of using learning assessment results in grades 10, 11 and 12 to 50%. While according to the current regulations, this rate is only 30% and only uses grade 12 results. Regarding graduation recognition, from 2025, students with foreign language certificates will not be converted into 10 points as in the current regulations.
Ready for the first exam under the new program
According to the draft new exam regulations, although 2 subjects and some new points are added, the 2025 high school graduation exam plan is organized in a streamlined manner by the Ministry of Education and Training, reducing pressure on candidates. Specifically, the exam time is shortened from 4 sessions as present to 3 sessions. The number of exam subjects is reduced from 6 to 4, including 2 compulsory subjects (math, literature) and 2 elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12. The Ministry also develops plans and guides localities to arrange exam sites and exam rooms according to the principle of maximum support, candidates only take the exam in one exam room during the entire exam period.
Expressing agreement with the new points of the draft, Principal of Truong Dinh High School (Hoang Mai District) Le Viet Duong commented: Increasing the rate of using learning assessment results in all three years of high school to 50%, instead of 30% and only using grade 12 results, is necessary and appropriate for comprehensive and objective assessment. This adjustment also brings more peace of mind to students when being assessed throughout the learning process, avoiding focusing only on grade 12. As for Nguyen Thi Quynh Chi, Nguyen Van Cu High School (Gia Lam District), she said: "Taking only 4 subjects, of which 2 are optional, is a huge advantage. I will focus on studying well the 2 optional subjects to achieve good results in the exam."
According to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong, after receiving comments, the Ministry will finalize the draft and is expected to issue new exam regulations in November 2024. The Ministry will also develop and publish sample exam questions so that students and teachers have more basis to better orient teaching and learning organization.
The 2025 high school graduation exam is scheduled to take place on June 26 and 27. In the 2024-2025 school year, Hanoi will have more than 100,000 12th graders, making it the leading locality in the number of students taking the high school graduation exam each year. Determined to organize the first high school graduation exam under the new program safely and successfully, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has implemented many solutions to support students.
Principal of Tran Hung Dao High School - Thanh Xuan (Thanh Xuan District) Vu Dinh Ha said: In March 2024, students across the city were tested on a common test based on the structure and format of the sample test for the high school graduation exam of the new program. This helps students somewhat visualize the changes compared to previous exams. However, this is the first generation of students to study and take the exam according to the new program, so anxiety is inevitable. The school is urgently developing sample tests, including questions in the new multiple-choice format to organize regular practice for students.
