Art lecture hall: Restore dignity!

Discipline in studying is the foundation for talent to fly far.

The recent graduation reports of directing students at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema, instead of being a true competency assessment exam, were distorted into "premiere nights" to introduce their works.

It was flashy beyond the framework, noisier than a professional art event but lacked the seriousness required of a pedagogical environment. A report play lasted up to 4 hours, the opening speech was as long as a press conference, students leisurely stated their "artistic manifesto", "life message", and put on the too-large coat of a famous director.

There are cases where the stage name is even written instead of the real name - which is clearly stated in the exam. There are also plays with up to 4 assistant directors. If everything is done by the assistants, how will the school's Pedagogical Council evaluate when the individual student's ability and responsibility are not properly reflected?

More seriously, some musicals even use music without permission from copyright. This is not only a careless act but also anti-educational, damaging the reputation of the school. A graduation report, in essence, is just a test within the scope of study. It needs to be viewed in its proper place: testing the professional maturity, organizational ability and artistic thinking of students. The mentality of "being eager to affirm one's name" and turning the lecture hall into a place for personal PR is unacceptable.

Master, director Cao Tan Loc, manager of the Department of Theater, frankly said: "The Department has taken measures to overcome this, requiring students to strictly comply with the graduation report regulations according to the school's standards. In the near future, specialized classes will be organized to help students clearly identify their roles and know how to introduce themselves to the media. We cannot be too hasty to assert ourselves in a graduation report play."

Complying with study discipline is the foundation for talent to fly far, not an excuse to turn an exam into a performance that loses the meaning of reporting on the apprenticeship process. If the school does not tighten the regulations and students do not adjust their learning attitudes, the so-called "graduation report" will slide down the drain. It is time to bring back seriousness to the art lecture hall!
