Ms. Hoang Thuy Kieu's family has about 300 Taiwanese guava trees, earning about 100 million VND each year. |
About 5km from the provincial administrative center, Linh Son guava area is located on gently sloping hills, mainly gravel soil. Although the land is arid, this place is very suitable for growing guava, giving sweet and crunchy fruit, favored by the market.
On the concrete road leading to the guava area, we visited the guava garden of Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Huyen, Deputy Director of Linh Nham Guava Cooperative. The two-story house surrounded by a lush green guava garden has provided a stable source of income for the family for many years.
Ms. Huyen said that more than 20 years ago, people in the area planted many types of fruit trees but had difficulty in selling them and had low efficiency. Around 2000, some households tried to bring Taiwanese guava varieties to plant. This guava variety adapted well to the soil, the fruit was crispy and sweet, quickly became popular and gradually spread throughout the region.
Currently, Ms. Huyen's family has about 200 guava trees. After 5 years of care, the garden has produced a stable harvest, with prices ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 VND/kg, each crop brings in about 100 million VND. Ms. Huyen said: Guava is easy to grow, mainly weeding, pruning and fertilizing periodically, but it is necessary to prevent fruit flies and stem borers by covering the fruit from a young age and applying safety measures.
Not only Ms. Huyen's family, many other households in the area are also attached to and getting rich from guava trees. A typical example is the family of Ms. Hoang Thuy Kieu, in Lang Phan hamlet. Ms. Hoang Thuy Kieu said: "Previously, my family planted some other types of fruit trees, but the economic efficiency was low. Now with more than 300 guava trees, each year the yield reaches about 10 tons, the family has a more stable income."
From barren lands, guava trees have become the main crop, bringing a prosperous life to many households. In 2024, Linh Nham Guava Cooperative was established with 24 members, linking production with an area of 12 hectares, making product consumption more convenient. In the same year, Linh Nham guava was recognized as a 3-star OCOP at the provincial level.
Linh Nham guava has been recognized as an OCOP product in 2024. |
According to statistics, the area of Linh Son guava is currently about 84 hectares, mainly concentrated in the groups: Phan Village, Ao Lang, Thong Nhan, Cay Son, Thanh Chu... with an annual output of hundreds of tons.
Many gardens are over 20 years old and productivity is gradually decreasing. To overcome this problem, the government and specialized agencies organize training courses on intensive farming techniques, garden renovation, and instruct people on the use of organic fertilizers, biological products and safe pest control.
Linh Nham Guava Cooperative is supported with labels, participates in fairs and exhibitions to promote products, helping the Linh Son guava brand become more and more known. However, the current challenge is the situation of some places selling poor quality guava but labeling it "Linh Son guava", affecting the reputation of the product.
Since 2019, the Intellectual Property Department has granted a certificate of protection for the trademark "Linh Nham Guava, Linh Son Ward". This is an important turning point, affirming the value of the product and creating peace of mind for people to invest. For the brand to spread, it is necessary to have the support of the government, cooperatives and people in building production areas according to safety and organic standards...
