High score still failed
With good academic ability, MQ confidently registered his first choice at Le Quy Don High School. On the day the 10th grade entrance exam results were announced, Q. and his mother were stunned because his total admission score was 25.25 (Math 9, Literature 8, Foreign Language 8.25) while Le Quy Don's standard score was 25.5.
“My son tried very hard, studying day and night throughout the entire 9th grade year. When I registered my application, I was also hesitant, but because the school's survey results were good, Le Quy Don was also my son's dream school, and it was close to home, I let him register. Unexpectedly, he failed his application by only 0.25 points,” said Thuy, MQ's mother, regretfully.
On the day of the 10th grade entrance exam results, Quan and his mother were shocked because he failed the admission with a total score of 25.25. |
According to Ms. Thuy, after knowing the results, her child was very sad. At night, she could not sleep. "I feel sorry for my child but I do not know what to do. I wish Hanoi had more public high schools so that my children would not suffer. I was advised to file a request for a review of the Literature exam instead of waiting for the school to lower the standard score," she confided.
Ms. Pham Thi Hoa has a child who is 0.25 points short of being admitted to Kim Lien High School. Determined to register for a top school, in the months leading up to the exam, the child often stays up until 2-3 am to study.
In addition to studying at school, he also spent 5-6 days a week studying at exam preparation centers. Seeing his determination, his parents could only accompany him to school and encourage him. But when the results came out, with just a little bit of luck, he could have achieved his dream.

Among 115 non-specialized public high schools in Hanoi, this year there are 12 schools that accept students with an average entrance score of 7.9 points/subject or higher, including: Le Quy Don High School (Ha Dong), Kim Lien High School, Phan Dinh Phung High School, Yen Hoa High School, Nhan Chinh High School, Viet Duc High School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Thang Long High School, Tran Phu High School, Cau Giay High School, Le Quy Don High School (Dong Da).
In which, the school has the highest standard score of 25.5, candidates must achieve an average score of 8.5 points/subject to be admitted.
It is easy to see that the schools with these extremely high admission scores are all located in the inner city.
In 2025, in Ha Dong district (old), there will be more than 6,000 candidates taking the 10th grade entrance exam, but in the whole district, there will only be 3 public schools: Le Quy Don, Quang Trung High School and Tran Hung Dao High School, enrolling about 2,200 students. In 2024, there will be more than 8,000 candidates taking the exam, but 3 public schools will only enroll about 2,000 students in 10th grade.
Or in Cau Giay district (old), every year there is a large number of junior high school graduates but currently there are only 2 public high schools: Cau Giay High School and Yen Hoa High School; in Area 2 (Hoan Kiem) for many years now there have only been 2 schools: Tran Phu High School and Viet Duc High School.
Pressure on inner city
There are many students, the number of public schools in the inner city is very small, so although the Hanoi Department of Education and Training divides the enrollment into 12 areas and has a mechanism for students to register an additional choice outside the enrollment area, this is not an effective solution.
According to regulations, each candidate can register for 3 wishes, in which wishes 1 and 2 must be in the same admission area, wish 3 can be in any admission area.
According to a teacher at a secondary school, when advising students on how to register for admission, teachers always emphasize prioritizing the first choice, reserve the second choice, and prevent failure of the third choice.
According to the data announced by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training on the number of candidates registering for the 10th grade entrance exam this year, suburban schools have low annual admission scores, and the number of candidates registering for their second and third choices has skyrocketed.
For example, at Bac Luong Son High School, only 396 students registered for the first choice, but the second choice was nearly 5 times higher; the third choice was 9.5 times higher with more than 3,800 candidates registered.
Or like Luu Hoang High School, the first choice only has 447 candidates registered but the third choice has more than 3,000 candidates.
Parents shared that their children registered for "the third choice just for the sake of it, even if they were accepted, they wouldn't study because it's too far"; registered for the third choice because the teacher encouraged them... In reality, there are students who register for the third choice that is dozens of kilometers away from their homes, even if they wanted to, they can't cycle to school every day, and it's even more difficult for their parents to pick them up and drop them off.
The lack of public schools in inner-city areas has been a reality for many years and is also the reason why the 10th grade entrance exam puts great pressure on candidates and parents.
Hanoi currently has more than 2,900 schools at all levels, but at the high school level there are only 119 public schools, more than 100 private schools and nearly 30 vocational education and continuing education centers.
Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam, Chairman of the Board of Dinh Tien Hoang High School (Hanoi) pointed out that the reason for the pressure on the 10th grade entrance exam is the lack of schools, especially in the inner city. For many years, the number of public high schools has been very small, while no new schools have been built. To solve this problem, Hanoi needs to quickly allocate land to build more schools to meet the learning needs of the people.
According to Dr. Lam, in places where apartments and high-rise buildings are built, the city must be determined to build schools. In addition to using the state budget, there must be policies to cooperate with organizations and individuals to build schools. For example, the city allocates land, organizations and individuals build schools and put them into operation, and the state must control tuition fees so that people can send their children to school.
