Carbonated drinks are linked to a higher risk of stroke, so limit your consumption to reduce your risk.
British doctor Xand van Tulleken shared on BBC Morning Live that statistics show that the risk of stroke in people consuming carbonated drinks is increasing, especially with age.
“A stroke is when blood flow to part of your brain stops,” explains the NHS . “This life-threatening condition can affect your speech, movement and can take a long time to recover.”
The doctor explained that the fragility of the arteries and the risk factors that damage the arteries can lead to stroke. Risk factors include smoking, drinking alcohol, unstable blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, increased intake of ultra-processed foods, consumption of carbonated beverages, and lack of exercise.
Regarding the above risk factors, according to Express , Dr. Tulleken said that all are common in modern life and people's risk of stroke is also increased. He added that carbonated drinks are associated with a high risk. So if you like to consume this type of drink, you should reduce your intake.
One viewer shared that her husband had a stroke but did not have the typical symptoms. Dr. Tulleken said that 85% of cases have common symptoms, but strokes can affect any part of the brain. Symptoms will depend on the blood vessel that is blocked. "Every stroke is different," he said.
Dr. Tulleken emphasizes a message he wants people to remember: "The bottom line is if you think there's a problem with your brain, talk to your doctor. This is a medical emergency."
