In a nationally televised address, the South Korean president said the decision was made to "protect constitutional order." Following the announcement, the South Korean Defense Ministry said that Minister Kim Yong Hyun had ordered a meeting of key commanders and asked for increased vigilance.
Mr. Kim Yong Hyun also ordered the South Korean military to maintain a state of emergency protection.
Responding to the declaration of martial law, opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae Myung said it was “unconstitutional”.
However, after only 6 hours, the South Korean cabinet approved the end of martial law at 4:30 a.m. on December 4.
