Thousands of fetuses are saved in the womb

Ho Chi Minh City: Over 2,500 fetuses with abnormalities were treated by doctors at Tu Du Hospital, helping the children to be born healthy last year.

The information was shared by Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai, Director of Tu Du Hospital, at the Vietnam - France - Asia Pacific Obstetrics and Gynecology Conference on August 18.

Pre-diagnosis of fetal abnormalities and interventional treatment right from the fetus has been promoted by the hospital in recent times, especially in the last 5 years, following the current trend of the world's obstetrics and gynecology industry. Tu Du is at the forefront of developing many diagnostic techniques, prenatal screening, detecting congenital abnormalities very early in the first three months of pregnancy, performing fetal intervention techniques such as umbilical cord clamping, endoscopic laser fetal intervention, fetal blood transfusion, amniotic transfusion, amniotic fluid reduction...

Dr. Trinh Nhat Thu Huong, Head of the Prenatal Care Department, said that in recent years, diseases such as fetal heart rhythm disorders such as fast or slow heartbeat, goiter, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, fetal infection... have all been monitored and effectively treated with medication.

"In the past, many babies died in the womb or were born with many illnesses and deformities, but now they are treated promptly and are developing healthily," the doctor said.

Coordination of obstetrics and pediatrics treatment between frontline hospitals has saved the lives of thousands of newborns with congenital disabilities. For example, Exit surgery is coordinated by doctors to save babies with tumors compressing the airway, which, if left untreated, could die within minutes of birth. Therefore, the baby, just emerging from the mother's womb, will be intubated within a few dozen seconds and operated on, with a spare operating room next door to perform surgery to clear the airway if the intubation fails.

In the coming time, the hospital will focus on developing techniques that have not yet been performed, such as fetal congenital heart intervention, fetal teratoma surgery, and stem cell transfusion to treat some immune, metabolic, and hematological diseases of the fetus. Transfusion of hematopoietic stem cells to the fetus is of great interest in Thailand, where the frequency of congenital hemolytic anemia is quite common.

Doctors recommend that pregnant women have regular check-ups and screening at important milestones to detect abnormalities and handle them promptly, helping the baby to be born healthy or terminate the pregnancy early when necessary.
