Effectiveness of goat breeding model from Program 1719

Change from "fishing rod"

The family of Mr. Dieu Khoeng, M'nong ethnic group, N'Jang Bo hamlet, Truong Xuan commune, Lam Dong province used to be a poor household because of little land for production, little capital, many children, and had to hire out to herd cows. In order to help him have a sustainable livelihood, the local government supported him with breeding goats so that he could develop livestock farming. Thanks to taking advantage of available natural grass resources, persistently caring for and multiplying the herd, he has now sold more than 5 goats, creating a significant source of income. The family's herd of goats has also remained stable at 5-7.

When receiving the goats, the veterinarians vaccinated them, instructed them on care and disease prevention techniques. Here, we take advantage of natural food sources and abundant leaves, which is very convenient for raising goats. With good care, the goats are healthy and reproduce regularly, and my family is very happy.

Dieu Khoeng, N'Jang Bo hamlet, Truong Xuan commune, Lam Dong province, has risen out of poverty thanks to making good use of the support and practical care from the State's support policy for ethnic minorities.

Not stopping there, he also renovated 4 sao of land to grow new coffee varieties, expanding the direction of economic development. By 2024, his family had built a new house, including 30 million VND from the province's housing support policy, the rest was from savings and self-spent effort...

Bon N'Jang Bo, Truong Xuan commune, currently has 375 households with more than 1,750 people; of which the M'nong and other ethnic minorities account for 60%. As a particularly difficult hamlet of the commune, N'Jang Bo is always given priority to implement many poverty reduction projects, support production and build infrastructure.

Ethnic minority households take advantage of available leaves, food, and agricultural waste as feed for raising goats.

Livelihood support programs are reviewed, giving priority to hard-working households who are determined to do business but lack the means. Thereby helping ethnic minorities change their production mindset, take the initiative to work and escape poverty. After only one year of support, many households have accumulated capital, reinvested and stabilized their economy.

Households like Dieu Khoeng, H'Trang, Luong Van Dong... are clear examples. Thanks to focused efforts, the number of poor households has decreased from 46 households (in 2021) to 20 households.

Providing livelihoods, opening a way out of poverty

The family of Ms. H'Na Sop, Ma ethnic group, Sa U Dru hamlet, Quang Khe commune, Lam Dong province has more than 1 hectare of coffee, but due to lack of investment capital and unsystematic care, the productivity is not high. Therefore, hunger and poverty continue to haunt her family. Understanding this, through the 1719 Program, Quang Khe commune supported Ms. H'Na Sop's family with more than 16 million VND to buy goats for breeding. At the same time, she borrowed an additional 50 million VND from the preferential capital source of the Social Policy Bank to build a goat barn and invest in crop care. Thanks to diversifying her livelihood, her family has increased their income and escaped poverty. Her method and goat raising model are being replicated locally.

Thanks to the State's support capital, my family has the conditions to invest in developing systematic livestock and crop farming. My family used to be a near-poor household, but now we have completely escaped poverty.

The herd of goats is well taken care of by Mr. K'Khueng, Ka Nur hamlet, Quang Khe commune, Lam Dong province, bringing in a good source of income.

Similarly, in 2023, Mr. K'Khueng's family, Ka Nur hamlet, Quang Khe commune, Lam Dong province also received 6 breeding goats from Program 1719. After a short time, the herd of goats increased to 12, some of which weighed 25 - 30 kg and were sold for 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg.

Raising goats is low cost, mainly labor and care. Leaves and natural grass are available, goat manure is composted for coffee, so I have a source of income to reinvest.

Mr. K'Khueng said

Deploying and implementing the production development support project is gradually changing the habits and thinking in agricultural production of the people. In particular, supporting livestock breeds, contributing to improving the lives of poor and near-poor households, gradually reducing poverty quickly and sustainably in ethnic minority areas.

According to Mr. Mai Van Tung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Khe Commune, the implementation of national target programs, especially Program 1719, has changed people's awareness in production and livestock breeding. Particularly, projects to support goat breeding are showing good results.

In the coming time, the locality will continue to implement support projects, ensuring the right goals and targets. At the same time, it will strengthen inspection and evaluation work to promote the spirit of self-reliance and self-improvement of the people.

According to the report of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions of Lam Dong province , in the period of 2021 - 2025 , the total capital to implement Program 1719 is more than 3,288 billion VND ; of which development investment capital is more than 2,113 billion VND and career capital is nearly 1,175 billion VND. In 2025 alone, the total planned capital assigned to implement the program is more than 823 billion VND. Accumulated disbursement up to June 2025 reached over 65% (more than 2,139/3,288 billion VND).
