Focus on key crops, flexible conversion

Ham Thuan Nam commune currently has 3,435 farmer members operating in 15 branches and 55 groups. The emulation movements organized synchronously from branches and groups have helped members connect and support each other in production, change the structure of crops and livestock, and apply science and technology in production.

Dragon fruit is still the main crop of the commune with an area of over 3,215 hectares. Mr. Tran Duy Hoai - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ham Thuan Nam commune said: In the past 9 months, dragon fruit output reached over 59,000 tons. Notably, the production area according to VietGAP standards has reached over 2,038 hectares, accounting for nearly 2/3 of the total area, contributing to improving product quality, meeting export market requirements. The Association has promoted propaganda and mobilized farmers to produce in a safe and sustainable direction, associated with preventing brown spot disease and other pests on dragon fruit trees.

For some areas of old dragon fruit with low productivity, farmers have proactively converted to new crops for effective productivity. Mr. Hoai added: "Currently, more than 10 households have switched to growing bamboo, coconut, areca, grapefruit... with initial positive results." At the same time, the association also mobilized people to promote livestock and poultry farming, focusing on preventing and controlling diseases on crops and livestock for stable and sustainable production. Thanks to the flexibility in production, farmers not only maintain their main crops, but also gradually diversify their livelihoods, hoping to open up a direction for sustainable agricultural development for the locality.

Not only focusing on production, farmers in the commune also actively participate in the New Rural Construction movement such as: dredging and repairing canals, contributing to the construction of rural roads, raising scholarship funds for poor students. Many effective models continue to be maintained such as: Farmers' Club with the law, the model "Business establishments with security and order conditions associated with the elimination of drug abuse"...

Many capital channels support farmers

To facilitate members to expand production, the Farmers' Association of Ham Thuan Nam commune has deployed a variety of loan sources. Currently, the association is managing two Farmer Support Fund projects with a total amount of VND 350 million for 19 households to borrow for production investment.

In addition, the association coordinated with the Social Policy Bank to manage 11 savings and loan groups, supporting 558 households with a total outstanding loan of more than 24 billion VND, focusing on poor and near-poor households, students and clean water in rural areas. In addition, the loan entrustment activity through Agribank Ham Thuan Nam was also effective, with 13 linked groups, 729 participating households, and a total outstanding loan of more than 85 billion VND. These capital sources have helped many households boldly expand production, apply technical advances and improve income. The association regularly checks and reminds the use of capital for the right purpose, ensures timely recovery of principal and interest, and avoids misappropriation that affects the organization's reputation.

With the direction of the Party Committee, the close coordination of the government, the Fatherland Front and other organizations, the activities of the Commune Farmers' Association are increasingly orderly, creative and effective. The Association also plays a good role as a "bridge" to bring the Party and State's policies to its members; mobilize farmers to participate in social insurance and health insurance, and effectively promote capital sources from many channels to develop the family economy.
