Hanoi students conquer audiences with English musical

Following the success of the play "Les Miserables", this year Olympia High School students continue to launch the classic musical "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by the great French writer Victor Hugo.

Inspired by the famous novel, the play brings to the audience a touching story about love, humanity and human values. This is also a bridge to bring classic literature in general and French literature in particular closer to the Vietnamese public, especially young audiences.

The process of selecting the main actors for the play was meticulous.

The musical project “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is an interdisciplinary learning activity of Literature - English - Economics and Law - Humanities - Fine Arts - Music. By dramatizing, the project overcomes the difficulties in teaching and reading classic literary works which have many differences in time, culture, society... compared to today's students.

The combination of interdisciplinary learning in project implementation also fosters in students the specific competencies of each subject and comprehensively develops the general competencies necessary for global citizens.

When participating in the project, high school students of the Olympia International Program are proactive and creative in how to convey the story. The project has a preparation time of nearly 9 months, all stages from writing the script, staging, performing, communicating... are done by the students themselves.

Le To Thi, an 11th grade student who plays the female lead in the play, shared: "Over the past 9 months, we have encountered many challenges while preparing each stage for the play. But from those challenges, we understand each other better and are increasingly united for the success of the work."

Olympia school students confidently completed their roles.

After this project, not only do Olympia students learn how to appreciate and interpret works and improve their foreign languages, they also learn to sympathize and understand their friends.

As the show's scriptwriter and director, Nguyen Nhu Xuan, an 11th grade student, spent a lot of time researching each character. "I want to adapt the work to be attractive and most suitable for students' age as well as Vietnamese culture," said Nhu Xuan.

With continuous success in large-scale productions, Olympia students are encouraged to create many different adaptations, presenting their own thoughts and perspectives inspired by the original work.

The scenes in the play left unforgettable emotions in the hearts of the audience.

Ms. Dam Phuong Thao, a teacher at the school, commented: "The process from the beginning to the end of the performance created many opportunities for Olympians. The students were able to practice and consolidate many knowledge and skills in various subjects. This will be a valuable memory and luggage for them to be more confident on the road ahead," Ms. Thao shared.

The play was widely praised by the audience.

It can be said that the English musical “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is the passion and enthusiasm of the entire group of international students at Olympia. The play brings many emotions to the audience and more importantly, this will be a memorable milestone in the meaningful learning and experience journey of the students.

A portion of the ticket sales for the musical “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” will be donated to the Olympia School’s “One Hundred Libraries - One Dream” project for students in disadvantaged areas across the country.
