Final year students take advantage of Tet holiday to review for exams

The Tet holiday lasts 14 days, but Thanh Phan only took three full days off, the rest of the time practicing subjects, preparing for two university entrance exams in March.

Thanh Phan, a 12th grade student in Phu Tho , has Tet holiday from February 5 to February 18 (December 26 to January 9). After going with the whole family to wish their relatives a happy new year, from the morning of the 2nd, Phan took care of the house for his parents and brother to go on a spring trip, then took the opportunity to bring his books out to study.

"I maintain daily practice tests, at least finishing one test of 1-2 subjects each day, then reviewing my knowledge. I'm in such a good studying mood and if I take a long break, I'm afraid I'll lose the habit," Phan said.

Aiming to enter two top universities, Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hanoi National University of Science , Phan has not dared to neglect his studies since the end of grade 11. In early March, Phan will take part in the thinking and capacity assessment exams of these two universities. The exam structure includes hundreds of questions, including Math, Literature, and natural sciences (Physics, Chemistry, etc.). Therefore, in addition to practicing graduation exam questions from previous years, Phan also familiarizes himself with the questions of individual exams and reads books and newspapers to expand his knowledge.

"I have an important exam coming up and if I don't study for 14 days, I don't feel secure," Phan shared.

Many students also diligently study during the Tet holiday. Hoang Minh Thu, class 9A6, Sai Dong Secondary School, Hanoi , said that before the 8-day Tet holiday (February 7-14), she received a stack of exercises including 15 English questions and two Math worksheets, also with 15 questions.

"If the teachers don't give me homework, I'll just study on my own. I'm afraid I'll forget what I learned if I don't touch the books during the whole holiday," Thu said. Explaining, the female student said she has to work hard because about 3 weeks after Tet holiday, she will take the midterm exam for the second semester, and most importantly, the 10th grade exam in early June. Thu is considering putting her first choice at Phuc Loi High School or Cao Ba Quat, which usually have an average score of 7.55 and 7.65 points per subject. However, there was a time when the female student only got 7 points in the practice test for each subject, so she was worried.

Thu finished most of her homework on the 28th and 29th of the lunar calendar, and plans to finish it on the 5th.

Observing every year, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tung, principal of Lomonosov Secondary and High School, Hanoi, said that almost every senior class has students like Phan and Thu.

"Many 12th and 9th graders are under pressure to get into universities or top high schools, especially those from families with poor economic conditions, so they have to rush into studying to get into public schools," said Mr. Tung.

In addition, some students study during Tet due to great pressure from their parents - parents who have high expectations after investing a lot in their children but are not sure about the results. However, there are also students who take advantage of Tet to review because they are self-disciplined, studious or have homework during this time.

According to Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, principal of Thai Thinh Secondary School, Dong Da District, Tet is an important holiday of the year, a time when family members reunite. If students are too caught up in studying and doing homework during Tet, they will not have time to experience and enjoy the activities during the holiday.

Besides, Mr. Cuong believes that the Tet holiday is not too long. Hanoi students have 8 days off, other provinces have about 10-14 days off, so students do not need to worry too much about forgetting knowledge.

"Not to mention, all schools have plans to review and supplement knowledge for students after the holiday. Teachers have a lot of experience in this, so students and their families can rest assured to celebrate Tet," said Mr. Cuong.

Similarly, Mr. Tung emphasized that "studying is studying, playing is playing" is the key to balance for students today. He advised students to boldly put away all their homework during the 10 days of Tet to rest, connect with family members and help their parents.

"It's also a golden time to relieve the pressure of studying over the past time for you guys," Mr. Tung shared.
