GĐXH - Trying to remove a fish bone stuck in his throat, a 69-year-old man in Hai Duong had to be hospitalized with a diagnosis of edema of the hypopharynx and larynx.
Swollen throat and larynx due to fish bone stuck in throat
Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital ( Quang Ninh ) informed that the hospital has just received and treated a case of fish bone stuck in the throat leading to swelling of the hypopharynx and larynx. Specifically, while eating, a 69-year-old man named N.D.C. (Kinh Mon - Hai Duong) got a fish bone stuck in his throat, feeling pain and difficulty when swallowing saliva.
Instead of going to a medical facility to get help removing the foreign object, the patient tried to remove it but failed. The pain in his neck increased, swelling and difficulty breathing so the patient was taken to the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital by his family. At the hospital, doctors performed an endoscopy to remove the foreign object, which was a piece of fish bone.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Huyen - Deputy Head of the hospital's ENT department, many people with fish bones stuck in their throats often use their hands to clear their throats or use tricks like swallowing hot rice or drinking water... However, this method is very dangerous, easily causing the fish bone to drift deeper or injure and perforate the esophagus.
Therefore, BSCKI. Nguyen Thanh Huyen advises that if you are unlucky enough to get a fish bone or other foreign object stuck in your throat, do not try to swallow it, and be careful not to stick your tongue in your throat because it will cause vomiting, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Instead, go to the nearest medical facility for examination and timely treatment.

Is fish bone stuck in throat dangerous?
According to many survey sources, the rate of fish bone stuck in the throat while eating is quite high. If you are lucky enough to only get a small piece of fish bone stuck, the bone may disappear after just a few hours, at the latest 1-2 days. On the contrary, in the case of a large bone stuck in the throat, it will not be able to heal itself. At that time, the fish bone has stuck inside and caused damage to part of the throat area.
If the fish bone is large, the location of the bone is very important. This is because the hard structure and sharp edges of the bone can cause damage to the throat. At this time, throat activities such as swallowing saliva can cause the bone to stick to the throat. Even more dangerous, the fish bone can puncture the esophagus. Normally, the rate of people with large fish bones being able to move the bone from the throat to the stomach is very low. The reason is that the structure of fish bones is often long and hard. Therefore, when accidentally swallowed, the bone will block the throat.
If a piece of fish bone is unfortunately stuck in the esophagus. Then, it enters the bronchus or penetrates the artery wall and cannot decompose on its own. The location of the fish bone puncture will create conditions for bacteria to invade. This causes serious infections such as: Sepsis; Lower respiratory tract infection; Abscesses on the pharynx, nasopharynx, tonsils; Esophageal, bronchial and lung abscesses; Acute pneumonia.
If the fish bone is deep in the esophagus and is not treated promptly, it can lead to dangerous complications such as: Difficulty breathing, wheezing; Pain after bone spurs increases and does not disappear after a few days; Chest pain; Swollen neck; Drooling; Unable to eat or drink.
What to do immediately after choking on a fish bone?
If you have a fish bone stuck in your throat, knowing how to handle it will help you remove the bone from your throat safely and effectively. On the contrary, just one wrong move can put the patient at serious risk. Here are some tips for people with fish bones stuck in their throat:
- Stop eating and drinking immediately if you find a fish bone stuck in your throat causing pain and discomfort.
- Spit out any food in your mouth and don't swallow anything else.
- Do not arbitrarily apply word-of-mouth methods without determining the specific situation.
If the patient finds that the fish bone cannot be handled at home, he should go to the hospital immediately for treatment with specialized tools. In fact, going to the hospital is the best thing to do after a fish bone is stuck. For some fish bones that are stuck too deeply, the doctor will use a laryngoscope to remove the fish bone.
