In response to reports of a sudden increase in electricity bills in August this year in some localities in the North and Central regions, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said it has directed power corporations to review and handle the situation.

EVN said there are currently more than 31 million residential customers managed and sold electricity by the group, of which 3.2 million customers (accounting for about 10%) consumed more than 30% in August.

The Group believes that last August, especially in the first half of the month, many areas in the North experienced a period of extremely hot weather, leading to a very high increase in electricity consumption. On August 4, electricity consumption in the North even reached a record high.

EVN cited data from customer care centers of power corporations as well as monitoring feedback on social networks, saying that up to now, there have been over 500 customer feedbacks about high electricity bills in August.

According to statistics of the Northern Power Corporation, in August, the switchboard also recorded 171,723 incoming calls, of which 150,387 were received (87.58%).

The power company said that the number of calls is higher during hot weather, so at these times, customer calls may not be received promptly.

After an initial review of relevant information reflecting the high electricity bills in August, EVN said it has not discovered any errors and is currently continuing to review and specifically check the contents of the electricity bill reflections.

Regarding the content posted on social networks reflecting electricity bills, EVN said that there are also many posts or groups that do not verify specific customer information, so businesses cannot specifically find out the authenticity of the information. Some information is even untrue or posted for the purpose of "attracting views" or selling online.

According to EVN statistics, there are many cases where customers do not buy electricity directly from the corporation but buy electricity from wholesale and retail electricity organizations.

These organizations still use mechanical meters, which require manual data entry and therefore are at a higher risk of errors than electronic meters in terms of recording wrong meter readings. According to preliminary statistics, there are currently 521 organizations nationwide that buy and sell electricity wholesale and retail, of which 481 are in the North alone.

For EVN electricity customers, electronic meters have now been installed for most customers. Installing electronic meters and reading data remotely helps to record meter readings without having to manually enter data as when using mechanical meters. Thereby, significantly reducing errors because the data is updated automatically, and the data also does not have subjective human intervention.
