Foldable screen iPhone coming soon

Recently, blog account "yeux1122" revealed that Apple may be in the final stages of selecting a major supplier for foldable screen technology.

Accordingly, potential suppliers need to ensure criteria for thickness, size and curvature radius, and require significant improvements in durability and crease prevention on the screen.

Several manufacturers have made progress toward meeting Apple’s requirements, with the supplier selection process expected to last from late February to early April.

Previously, the patent "Electronic device with durable foldable display" described a way to solve the problem of foldable display durability, helping the foldable iPhone to be launched soon.

As described, the folding screen increases durability by making the glass thinner at the fold and thicker at other parts to protect the screen from impacts.

The display will consist of two parts: a protective coating and a flexible display panel. The panel can bend around an axis, while the coating is made of a layer of glass with a thin beveled section that extends along the axis of the bend.

It is known that the two foldable iPhone prototypes have internal screen sizes of 7.9 and 8.3 inches, so the size of the device will be larger than the Galaxy Z Fold5 with a 7.6-inch screen. With this size, the iPhone will have a book-like opening and closing design instead of a clamshell folding as previously rumored.

Previously, Apple was granted a patent called "Electronic devices with flexible display covers" claiming that it has found a way to mix rigid and flexible areas for the display so that it can self-heal.

It is known that this flexible layer may include an elastic layer and this is a self-healing element. The elastic can stretch but can return to its original shape (similar to the mattress model used in the home).

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple will introduce two 20.3-inch and 18.8-inch foldable MacBook models first and will have more than 1 million units shipped in 2026. The price of the foldable screen panel is 650 USD and the hinge is 250 USD. LG Display is the exclusive partner to develop the panel while Amphenol is in charge of the hinge.
