Overcome the problem of leaking more than 2.8 tons of acid

On January 1, news from the Department of Industry and Trade of An Giang province said that JIC Vietnam Company Limited (abbreviated as JIC Vietnam Company - located in Tan Trung Industrial Park, Phu Tan District, An Giang) has completed the incident of leaking more than 2.8 tons of sulfuric acid to the outside, which occurred on the evening of September 13, 2023.

Specifically, regarding the incident, Mr. Nguyen Minh Hung, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of An Giang province, has just signed a document to send to the People's Committee of An Giang province to report on the work of overcoming and handling the chemical leak incident of JIC Vietnam Company.

According to Mr. Hung, relevant agencies and units of An Giang province have inspected, guided and supervised the handling and troubleshooting work. Up to now, JIC Vietnam Company has replaced all broken pipes that caused acid leaks; installed internal regulations and chemical safety warning signs in the acid storage tank area. At the same time, it has renovated and built a sturdy roof for the two acid storage tanks to prevent rainwater from overflowing into the acid storage tanks. The height of the incident tank has been increased by 40 cm to reach a volume of 8.9 m ³ , and the tank area has been tiled and painted with anti-corrosion paint to prevent acid leaks.

An Giang Environmental Resources Monitoring and Engineering Center was hired by JIC Vietnam Company to take soil samples of the company for analysis 3 times and to take water samples of Vam Nao River for pH analysis to assess the impact and influence of the incident on the environment. The results of pH analysis of the company's soil samples and water samples of Vam Nao River, underground water samples in the acid leak area are within the allowable limits according to the standards of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Up to now, JIC Vietnam Company has completed the work of fixing the leak of more than 2.8 tons of acid to the outside.

According to Mr. Hung, JIC Vietnam Company has hired an environmental company to collect more than 51.8 tons of hazardous waste soil and sand (soil and sand contaminated with acid) for treatment... Since the incident, the company has urgently and actively made efforts to implement solutions to overcome the incident. Up to now, the incident remediation work has been considered completed. In the near future, this unit will take soil samples in the incident area to periodically check the pH value quarterly and continuously for 4 quarters to report to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of An Giang to monitor, track and guide the company to implement environmental treatment solutions when necessary.

As Thanh Nien reported, JIC Vietnam Company produces insulation materials. On the evening of September 13, 2023, the company's tank containing about 3 tons of 60% sulfuric acid leaked more than 2.8 tons. The cause was a crack in the meca pipe used to test the acid in the tank, causing the acid to overflow and pour into the backup wastewater treatment tank area where HDPE plastic lining was placed.

Considering that the acid leak did not cause any human damage, but the amount of acid could seep into the sand layer below, the People's Committee of An Giang province directed relevant sectors to inspect and guide JIC Vietnam Company to handle and restore the original state of the environment, preventing soil, surface water and groundwater pollution caused by the incident.
