Two Vietnamese professors officially received academician degrees from the World Academy of Sciences

Two Vietnamese professors have just been officially awarded certificates of recognition as academicians of the World Academy of Sciences.

Vietnam has 2 academicians of the World Academy of Sciences.

Today (October 2), at the 17th Conference Forum of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Prof. Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS, awarded official academician recognition certificates to two Vietnamese professors: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University and Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hoang, former Vice Director of 108 Military Central Hospital.

Previously, since November last year, the World Academy of Sciences has elected 74 new academicians, including Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai and Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hoang. Today, the President of TWAS awarded the official academician recognition certificates to the two professors through the new member reception ceremony witnessed by more than 300 scientists from all over the world.

In this election of new academicians, there are 74 new members - the most in history. Of which, Brazil and China lead with 10 academicians, followed by India with 9, Malaysia with 7, South Africa with 4. Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt and the US each have 2 representatives.

This year's TWAS conference takes place under the theme "Building a Sustainable Future: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation in Global Development". The event includes scientific sessions, thematic workshops, high-level discussions, a scientific award ceremony and a welcome ceremony for new TWAS academicians.

2 professors are authors of many prestigious research works

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was born in 1974, from Quang Ngai , graduated in chemistry from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City). She was appointed associate professor in 2014 and professor in 2020. She is a leading scientist in researching drugs from Vietnamese medicinal herbs, with many important contributions to the medical industry.

Her research team has successfully developed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis from domestic medicinal herbs. To date, Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has published more than 80 prestigious international articles. With her contributions, she has received many noble awards such as the Prime Minister's Certificate of Merit, the Kovalevskaia Award - a noble award for female scientists in the field of natural sciences...

Professor Nguyen The Hoang was born in 1965, from Ha Tinh. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2006, received his Doctor of Science degree in 2008 and was awarded the title of Professor in 2018.

He is the main author of more than 100 research works published in national and international journals, chaired and participated in many scientific research projects at the national and ministerial levels. His scientific research works mainly focus on the fields of neovascularization and cell culture, microsurgical free tissue flap transfer, treatment of complex congenital limb defects and organ transplantation.

Professor Nguyen The Hoang has won many prestigious national and international scientific awards such as: Vifotec, Nepomuc von Nussbaum, Karl-Max von Bauerfeind, APKO...; First and Third Class Labor Medals. Notably, he also won the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Science Award of the German Academy of Sciences Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for exceptionally outstanding research works with scientific breakthroughs.

The World Academy of Sciences is an international organization under UNESCO, established in 1983, bringing together more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from more than 100 countries. This organization was officially recognized by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Javier Pérez de Cuéllar in 1985 and is currently an associate member of the International Scientific Council (ISC). These recognition decisions have brought the total number of TWAS academicians to 1,444. Of which, Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai and Professor Nguyen The Hoang are among the few Vietnamese recognized as TWAS academicians.
