Discovering the "archaeological secrets" inside the Hau Lau archaeological site at Thang Long Imperial Citadel

The thousands of square meter land area inside Thang Long Imperial Citadel is being excavated by the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology for archaeological research and has discovered many vestiges of gardens, ponds, and artifacts with architecture from the Early Le and Later Le dynasties.

The thousands of square meter land area located in the Hau Lau relic area in the Thang Long Imperial Citadel complex in Ba Dinh district ( Hanoi ) is being excavated by the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology to conduct archaeological research in the Thang Long Imperial Citadel area.

The ancient Hau Lau relic site is called Tinh Bac Lau, built after the Later Le Dynasty, was the residence and living place of the queen and princess. During the Nguyen Dynasty, Hau Lau was the residence of the concubines and beauties who followed the king on each "tour" to Bac Ha.

The land is surrounded by corrugated iron fence to facilitate excavation without affecting surrounding areas.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thang - a specialist of the Historical Archaeology Department (Vietnam Institute of Archaeology), the unit has now dug down to about 1.5m and this week the unit is cleaning the surface.

"Expanding the exploration excavation to the northeast of Kinh Thien Palace with an area of ​​nearly 1,000 square meters in 2020, the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology discovered many traces of gardens, ponds, and artifacts with architecture from the early Le and Le Trung Hung dynasties, leading to the hypothesis that the Thuong Uyen garden and Can Chanh Palace were first revealed at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site - Hanoi," said Mr. Thang.

Thang Long Imperial Citadel in particular and Thang Long Citadel in general is a large, rich and complex relic site. Identifying the architecture of the Imperial Citadel cannot be done overnight but must be long-term, meticulous and step-by-step.

The excavated objects will be separated by type.

The items were excavated by the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology.

Mr. Thang said, during the Le Trung Hung period: Bricks, tiles, hollow bricks decorated with chrysanthemums, various types of glazed ceramics. The number of artifacts from the Le Trung Hung period was quite large.

The items are still quite intact.
