"Where there is good land, there are birds of prey"
Tay people from Cao Bang province have lived and worked in village 12 since the 1980s. Village 12 has 212 households with 892 people, of which about 80% are Tay people. People are cultivating 287 hectares of coffee, a part of the area is being replanted and grafted with new varieties.
Up to now, villagers have grown key coffee varieties such as TR4, TS5, TS1, Thien Truong and Huu Thien, purchased from qualified seed suppliers, suitable for local climate and soil conditions, and have competitive advantages in the market, meeting the tastes and needs of consumers.
Head of Village 12, Nong Van Huong, said: The first residents settled in this land nearly 40 years ago. In the early days, people grew tea to process tea, and later, they switched to growing coffee. After many ups and downs of coffee, people still maintain the same area, replanting and grafting new varieties. Good harvests and good prices have helped people become well-off, rich, and become billionaires, because most of them have billions of dong in income.
For a long period, from 2013 to 2019, coffee prices fell, and income from coffee was unstable, making family life difficult. However, farmers in the village still had no intention of giving up the tree that is considered the mainstay of local economic development. According to many people, no matter when coffee is planted, to reap the eye-catching ripe fruits, farmers also "water" it with sweat, effort and accept to face the risks and challenges. Only then can we get the sweet fruit and success today.

Mr. Be Van Long, one of the long-time coffee growers in the commune, confided: "For 40 years since leaving his hometown Cao Bang to start a business in Bao Lam 1, thanks to growing coffee, my family has overcome poverty, had food and savings, and given his children a proper education. Currently, the family has 10 hectares of coffee, harvesting 40 tons of coffee beans each year."
Or like Mr. Be Kim Hoa, who currently cultivates 6 hectares of coffee, each crop yields over 20 tons of beans, with an average income of over 2 billion VND per year. According to Mr. Be Kim Hoa, the coffee crop in 2023 and 2024 will have higher prices than previous years, so people will have a high income. With the new harvest in 2025 approaching, everyone is eagerly waiting for a good coffee season with good prices.
Currently, the village has no poor or near-poor households, every household has an income of 100 million to several billion VND/year, thanks to coffee. Walking around the village, houses built in the form of villas are built close together, many families own billion-dollar cars.

Poverty is just a memory
In the memory of Mr. Be Van Bich (70 years old), in the early days of starting a business, people still had many difficulties; most of the houses were thatched and made of earth, living from meal to meal. Now, things have changed dramatically. His family cultivates 5 hectares of coffee, each year yielding about 18 tons of coffee beans. Thanks to that, he has long built a spacious, modern 2-storey house.
Mr. Be Van Bich confided that, in the past, for the villagers, a bicycle was a precious treasure. Now, billion-dollar cars run all over the streets, some families have two. Generally, most villagers can afford to buy a car worth several hundred million to one billion VND. Currently, the village has 35 cars to serve the transportation needs.
Mr. Be Quoc Hung (39 years old) left his hometown Cao Bang with his parents to Bao Lam 1 commune to start a business when he was 7 years old. Now he is married and has a stable income from 6 hectares of coffee, which yields 25 tons of coffee beans each year. Mr. Hung remembers very clearly the first time he left his hometown Cao Bang to start a business in Lam Dong . At that time, Cao Bang was mainly rocky and mixed with soil, people grew corn, raised a few chickens and free-range pigs. In general, life at that time was still full of hardships and difficulties, memories of poverty were deeply engraved in the hearts of every child in the highlands. In the new land, everyone was eager to break each red basalt soil slope, wherever the land was reclaimed, tea and coffee grew there. Thanks to that, today every family is warm, well-off and wealthy.
Ms. Le Thi Kim Thoa - Head of the Farmers' Association of Village 12 said: The main income of the people comes from coffee trees, the story of billion-dollar income is no longer rare in the village but is widespread. What is easily recognized in the gardens of the Tay people here is that the gardens are green all year round with a variety of plants, each row of green vegetables. In addition, they also raise chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, grow mulberry, raise silkworms to improve their lives and improve family meals.
Ms. Thoa is Kinh, from Ha Tinh, she married Mr. Be Van Nhuan, a local Tay. Thanks to hard work, diligence, and plowing over 5 hectares of coffee, each year the couple harvests about 18 tons of coffee beans. Roughly calculated, with coffee prices around 115,000 VND/kg, the annual income is over 2 billion VND.
In recent times, local authorities have instructed people to intercrop trees such as Cassia alata to create soil cover, which can both protect soil resources and provide shade for coffee, block wind, and prevent soil erosion. Along with that, the People's Committee of Bao Lam 1 commune continues to propagate and guide people to replant and graft coffee varieties on old, low-yielding coffee areas and apply sustainable and effective production processes.
Mr. Trinh Van Thao - Chairman of the People's Committee of Bao Lam 1 Commune said: In recent years, the lives of the Tay and Nung people in the locality have changed dramatically. Houses have been built spaciously, many households have earned billions of dong from agricultural production, which is a very happy thing. The people have strictly followed the Party's guidelines and policies; the State's policies and laws; movements such as: economic development, donating land for rural roads, preserving and promoting good traditional cultural identities have always achieved many positive results.
Over time, it can be affirmed that among the local agricultural products, coffee is considered to be the most complete in terms of characteristics and has many famous brands. The distinctive coffee flavor, distilled from the sweat and effort of farmers in the Southern Central Highlands, has been spreading its fragrance in the domestic and foreign markets; increasingly affirming its brand.
The Tay villagers' faith in coffee trees is nurtured day by day; this bitter-tasting but "sweet" drink has helped most of the villagers earn billions, change their lives, and become well-off.
