Series of solutions to reduce dust at Long Thanh airport

VietNamNetVietNamNet18/05/2023

Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) has just sent a report to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Dong Nai province on the plan to reduce dust pollution at component project 3 "Investment in construction of Long Thanh International Airport phase 1".

Previously, on April 24, the Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued a decision to impose an administrative penalty based on the results of the Ministry's inspection team conducted on March 31.

ACV said that in parallel with implementing the administrative penalty decision, the unit has been implementing a series of measures requested by the inspection team to overcome the dust pollution situation.

Specifically, complete the public road system according to the approved design before May 15, immediately deploy settling pits, drainage ditches in the 722-hectare area and regulating lakes according to the approved design documents.

Establish a specialized watering truck team at the construction site under the direct management of the contractor's Labor Safety Team and direct supervision of the Project Management Board.

Applying information technology in watering operations: managing and operating each member contractor watering on the transportation route, setting up a Zalo group to supervise and operate each watering driver.

Organize training and propaganda for cadres, workers, drivers, and machine operators to comply with regulations on environmental sanitation. Soil transport vehicles must run on the prescribed route that has been watered, and vehicle speed must not exceed the prescribed speed in the construction site.

ACV also transferred two fire trucks to the Long Thanh airport project management board to focus on dust suppression work.

For contractors working in the construction area, ACV said it has decided to reduce construction intensity during peak hours of strong dust and dryness (10am to 12pm; 1pm to 4pm).

ACV committed to planting grass as soon as the construction of the 722-hectare landfill is completed to restore vegetation cover and limit the wind from blowing dust back into the surrounding air.

At the same time, ACV has also cooperated with local authorities to provide support to households affected by dust; and provided funding to install air conditioners in some schools near the airport (Binh Son commune, Long Thanh district)...

Regarding the solution using "dustproofing by spraying polymer" technology, ACV said it was not included in the "Approved Environmental Impact Assessment Report".

Therefore, ACV recommends that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment provide more detailed instructions and possibly through projects or units that have experience implementing this solution so that the unit has enough reference information as a basis for implementing the next steps.
