Moderate and heavy rains lasting for two days on December 1-2 caused the water level in Kien Giang and Long Dai rivers ( Quang Binh ) to rise, flooding fields in low-lying areas, causing many people to lose a whole crop of Tet flowers they were growing.

Fields of land growing chrysanthemums for Tet are submerged in flood water.

The most severely damaged commune is Hong Thuy (Le Thuy district), dozens of hectares of crops were flooded, especially many farmers who spent time and effort to grow flowers to sell for Tet but have now lost everything.

The amount of rain in the past two days was lower than previous rains, however the amount of water from upstream was still very large.

Mr. Nguyen Van Minh (Hong Thuy commune, Le Thuy district) said that 3 sao of vegetables and flowers for Tet were all damaged, almost beyond repair.

"I also anticipated that there would be floods, and used sandbags to block water from entering the fields, but it was unsuccessful. The vegetables and flowers grown for Tet are considered a waste. If I replant them now, I probably won't be able to sell them in time for Tet," said Mr. Minh.

A dike broke, causing water to flood into the flower garden. People tried to pump the water out in time to plant a new crop.

People are worried that they will not be able to plant a new flower crop in time for Tet.

According to Thanh Nien reporters, on the morning of December 3, many households were still trying to use pumps to pump water out of their fields and prepare the land to plant new trees.

"I started to grow these flowers nearly 50 days ago. As soon as they sprouted, the flood came and now it is very difficult to fix. I estimate that I have lost nearly 15 million VND for about 7,500 seedlings and fertilizer," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Lat (Hong Thuy commune).

7,500 chrysanthemum plants of Mrs. Lat had completely rotten roots.

Some other households also promptly pulled out seedlings before the flooding, however, according to many farmers, if replanted, these plants would grow slowly and produce flowers of low quality.

The flower trees were promptly rescued by people before the water flooded in.

Mr. Pham Minh Huan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hong Thuy Commune (Le Thuy District) said that, in the face of heavy rain and floodwaters, the local government has informed people to come up with plans to promptly overcome and save crops.

"In recent days, heavy rains have occurred in the area, rising floodwaters have submerged nearly 50 hectares of crops, many areas of flowers, onions, mustard greens... are completely submerged under water. The local government has urgently notified and supported people to pump water out of flooded fields to save the crops," said Mr. Huan.
