Previously, Mang Thit brick and pottery village stretched 30km in Vinh Long city, Long Ho district, Mang Thit district. During its most prosperous period (early 21st century), the village had more than 3,000 kilns, so it was called the "brick kiln kingdom" or "red kingdom" of the Mekong Delta.
Today, Mang Thit red brick and ceramic village is more than 100 years old, with about 800 kilns remaining with an area of about 3,000 hectares, concentrated along the Thay Cai canal to the section bordering the Co Chien river.
In August, photographer Nguyen Khanh Vu Khoa had the opportunity to work in Mang Thit brick and pottery village. According to his research, this is the most famous and oldest brick and pottery making area in the West. Most of the brick making households are concentrated in Nhon Phu and My An communes of Mang Thit district.
Mang Thit Vinh Long is a place that still preserves many valuable ancient primary clay mines. All primary clay mines are located inside traditional red brick and ceramic villages along both banks. This is the most important raw material for making decorative products, or in construction such as red bricks, ceramics, etc.
From the experienced hands of craftsmen, thousands of valuable works are created, bringing many useful functions to people.
Brick and ceramic kilns look like giant mushrooms growing along Thay Cai canal. The kilns are also built from thousands of bricks arranged in a neat circular tower architecture, gradually getting smaller at the top, usually 7 - 12m high.
The ceramic kilns here not only produce for domestic use but also export ceramic products to many other countries around the world .
In November 2024, the People's Committee of Vinh Long province approved the planning project to build a brick and pottery kiln area in Mang Thit district into a key tourist area. This place is oriented to become a national tourist area, playing a role in promoting local socio -economic development.
Mang Thit is a traditional craft village that day and night fired bricks and ceramics for construction and daily life. Today, the village is on the way to becoming a tourist destination with homestays, craft product display areas, and souvenir production...
“Along with the Co Chien River, the old smoky brick kiln has quietly gone through many ups and downs, so anyone who comes here can feel its timeless beauty. Mang Thit Vinh Long brick kiln has an ancient and unique beauty. The image of the bricks lying silently in the middle of a peaceful, tranquil scene at the kilns makes the scene here more attractive and peaceful than ever. In the late afternoon, the scene of Mang Thit Vinh Long brick kiln becomes even more sparkling and impressive,” Mr. Vu Khoa shared.
