Traffic accidents increased in all three criteria.

According to the report of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, in the first 6 months of 2024, the traffic accident situation was complicated. There were 113 cases in the province, killing 50 people and injuring 97 people; compared to the same period in 2023, there was an increase of 20 cases (21.5%), an increase of 13 deaths (35.1%), an increase of 22 injuries (29.3%). Of which, there were 3 very serious traffic accidents, killing 6 people; 60 serious traffic accidents, killing 42 people and injuring 46 people. 6 localities with an increase in the number of deaths due to traffic accidents include Cam Lo, Trieu Phong, Huong Hoa, Gio Linh districts, Dong Ha city and Quang Tri town.

In particular, there were 24 traffic accidents involving school-age children, killing and injuring many people, causing public outrage. Traffic accidents on national highways increased, with 69 cases, accounting for 62.7%; traffic accidents involving alcohol occurred in 20 cases, accounting for 18.2%, killing 9 people and injuring 20 others. The situation of gathering, driving in groups, with signs of illegal racing still occurs.

Compliance is the main cause

Analyzing the causes of the increase in traffic accidents, authorities and localities said that there are many factors, both objective and subjective. Subjectively, the main cause is the low awareness of traffic safety laws among a segment of the population.

In the first 6 months of 2024, the Provincial Traffic Police force detected 14,376 violations, including 6,373 cases of cars, 7,546 cases of motorbikes, and 457 cases of other vehicles; penalized 9,176 cases, with fines of more than 26.4 billion VND.

Common violations include speeding, with 4,320 cases; alcohol and drug violations, with 2,083 cases; other common violations include driving in the wrong lane, not paying attention, not wearing a helmet when riding a motorbike, etc.

Objectively, there are many reasons, including the fact that Dong Ha City currently does not have a bypass route through the city, causing vehicles running the North-South route to have to travel through the city center, potentially causing traffic accidents, especially when the Vietnam Road Administration diverts traffic on the Cam Lo - La Son Expressway, bringing heavy trucks and passenger cars to National Highway 1, creating a lot of pressure on the work of ensuring traffic order and safety.

Criticizing 6 localities for increasing traffic accidents

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Van Hung emphasized: The main objective of the task of ensuring traffic order and safety is to ensure smooth traffic activities, support socio-economic development; traffic must be safe for people, and minimize traffic accidents, deaths and injuries.

Departments, branches and localities must consider this a political task and a key task, need to promote responsibility and perform well; need to improve the local Traffic Safety Committee, associated with the responsibility of the head. From there, criticize 6 localities for increasing traffic accidents, at the same time commend localities with many efforts to reduce traffic accidents.

Regarding the tasks in the coming time, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested departments, branches and localities to innovate propaganda methods and objects, and in the long term, focus on pupils and students, starting from preschool level. Praise and replicate good models and methods of propaganda to raise awareness.

In particular, to raise awareness of compliance, the provincial police force must regularly patrol and strictly handle violations. In the immediate future, launch a peak period of patrolling, controlling and handling violations of traffic safety order, focusing on regularly and resolutely handling violations of alcohol concentration, speeding and other behaviors that are the main causes of traffic accidents.

Focus on coordination between forces in surveying and proposing solutions to unreasonable traffic organization; propose solutions to "black spots" and potential traffic accident spots. Allocate sufficient funds to handle unreasonable and potential traffic accident spots. Speed ​​up the construction progress of the Eastern bypass project of Dong Ha City to put it into use soon, limiting traffic accidents. Strengthen the management of passenger and freight transport activities.
