Paving the way for the China-Japan-Korea trilateral summit

China supports South Korea's push to hold a China-Japan-South Korea summit later this year.

On August 31, Xinhua News Agency reported that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin had a phone call to promote bilateral cooperation and agreed to step up negotiations with Japan.

During the phone call, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China will maintain continuity and stability in its foreign policy toward South Korea. In addition, Wang Yi noted that mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation is the foundation of bilateral relations, the source said.

Kyodo News agency on September 1 quoted information from the Chinese Foreign Ministry as saying that Mr. Wang Yi told his counterpart Park Jin that Beijing supports Seoul playing an active role "in promoting trilateral cooperation between China, South Korea and Japan."

Seoul is pushing to hold a three-way summit later this year, Kyodo News reported.

Park Jin and his counterpart Wang Yi also agreed to regularly hold mutual visits by their foreign ministers. In addition, the two foreign ministers agreed to hold bilateral talks focusing on diplomatic and security issues, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said.
