Wishing to make herbal chicken eggs a Thanh Hoa specialty

As a member of the Five-Tang Cooperative (Dong Son ward, Bim Son town, Thanh Hoa), Ms. Pham Thi Hong Nhung became involved in farming after learning that her two friends, her brothers Ha Minh Nguyen and Lai Thanh Bien, were determined to leave the city to return to the countryside to study chicken farming.

Realizing that the rice and corn grown by the people could not be sold, the members of the cooperative joined forces to research, build barns and then buy Egyptian chickens to develop livestock farming.

In the first two years, productivity was not high, and at times the cooperative suffered losses. Undaunted, Ms. Pham Thi Hong Nhung and Mr. Ha Minh Nguyen focused on exploiting local resources to develop the model.

"We choose herbs such as ginseng, moringa, lemongrass... ground and mixed with corn, rice, soybeans according to our own formula to make bran for chickens. Through the research process, the cooperative has now created herbal fish protein, a form of microbiological technology to increase nutrition and resistance for chickens. Therefore, antibiotics are not on the list of drugs used on our farm," said Ms. Pham Thi Hong Nhung.

Thanks to being raised using a special process, herbal chicken eggs have Omega-3 content 10-15 times higher than regular chicken eggs.

Ms. Nhung said: "Before, I kept hearing people say that pregnant women should eat goose eggs and take this or that medicine to be healthy. I was very worried because not everyone had the financial means to buy them.

When I started the farm, I told my colleagues that chicken eggs are a popular food, easily accessible to everyone. If we can produce good eggs, pregnant women in particular and consumers in general can buy and use them. And we did it!

Currently, the farm has a scale of more than 3 hectares with about 1,200 egg-laying chickens. In addition, the cooperative also cooperates with 2 local chicken farms with a scale of about 3,000 chickens.

With that quantity, each day, the chicken farm sells about 2,000 - 2,500 eggs to the market, generating a revenue of about 2 million VND/day. The farm has created regular jobs for 5 local workers with a salary of 7 million VND/month.

Not only stopping at making clean eggs, Ms. Pham Thi Hong Nhung is currently completing the procedures to have her herbal egg products recognized according to VietGap standards.

"With the advantage of land and climate suitable for growing herbs as a source of clean food for livestock, I hope that one day, when mentioning Thanh Hoa specialties, people will not only talk about nem chua but also think of herbal chicken eggs."

Mr. Lai Thanh Tuyen, Vice Chairman of Dong Son Ward People's Committee, assessed that this is a new product, bringing high economic efficiency. The locality hopes that in the coming time, the product will be more welcomed by the market, contributing to the development of the local economy, creating jobs for many people.
