Pink Grass Season in Dalat

(NADS) - In the rainy season, the Pink Grass is as thick as a giant green velvet carpet, in the dry season it is as bright pink as a young girl's lips. Moved by KaHong's eternal love, after passing away, K'Suong turned into dew drops, falling on the Pink Grass every night "like an endless apology"

Legend of Pink Grass

Once upon a time, in the La Ngu Thuong region (today's Da Lat), there was a beautiful and virtuous girl named KaHong. One day, she fell in love with K'Suong's "butterflies": "The stars in the sky are not as beautiful as the moon/ The girls in the region are not as beautiful as you". She proposed to him (according to the matriarchal system), but his father's dowry was too high. After years of hard work without enough dowry, she had to watch him marry another girl who was richer than her. Suffering and desperate, she stayed single, working day and night, forgetting to eat and sleep until she was exhausted, committing suicide. On the grave where she was buried at the foot of the hill, a very strange type of grass grew. In the rainy season, it was as thick as a green velvet carpet, in the dry season it was as rosy as a young girl's cheeks and lips, people pitifully named it Pink Grass. Moved by KaHong's undying love, after her death, K'Suong turned into a dewdrop, every night falling on the Pink Grass "like an apology" and never leaving. Only when the sun rises does the dew evaporate into steam and fly up to the sky, and then the next night, it turns back into dew on the Pink Grass. How mysterious and humane. Nowadays, only in Da Lat and the surrounding areas is there a Pink Grass hill, each night covered in dew like white European snow in the middle of a Vietnamese summer.

Romantic and charming

The beginning of the dry season (November every year) is the time when the Pink Grass flowers bloom and show off its beauty. With its strong and resilient vitality, whether on dry rocky hills or red basalt soil, the Pink Grass always holds its head high, proud and defiant. In spring, the Pink Grass flowers are covered with dew like white snow (morning) and bloom bright pink (noon), then turn purple-pink (afternoon). The grass's hair is soft and smooth, rubbing against the body, causing tickling and delight. The Pink Grass does not emit fragrance, but is romantic, ethereal, and playful with the wind and dew. Not fond of ostentation, the Pink Grass seeks quiet places, where few people visit. Simple, rustic, wearing a pink shirt, the Grass coquettishly sits in the arms of Mother Nature, "captivating" even the most indifferent. The Pink Grass misses the wind and loves the dew. Every time the dew comes, the Grass shyly sheds sparkling tears, sending the dew the flavor of true love. However, the dew is a flirtatious person, likes to wander everywhere, giving love to all things in heaven and earth. The pink grass is sad and absent-minded, every day only knowing to rely on the sun to shine, highlighting its pink coat, hoping that every night the dew will be moved with compassion... and come back.

Pink Grass Photo Hunt

In recent weeks, many people have been "feverish" because they have not seen the Pink Grass in Da Lat with their own eyes. Those who are passionate about photography, go to a Pink Grass hill somewhere, before 5 am, to take pictures of the fragile snow grass hill in the cold fog. You should go by motorbike or car (4-7 seats), because you have to weave through the bumpy, winding trails. Don't accidentally step on the Pink Grass, the fog will melt, the grass will be crushed miserably, and the photo will not be beautiful. You should use a short focal length lens (wide) to express the vastness and grandeur of the Pink Grass hill. And, don't forget, use a long focal length lens (tele) to capture the sparkling dew drops on the tips of the grass. You can use a smartphone, tablet (iPad), camera... to take beautiful pictures of the Pink Grass. You should take pictures from many angles, at many times (morning, noon, afternoon, evening, night) to have many beautiful, new photos. "Taking pictures is like shooting a gun" - hold your breath and pull the trigger, hold your hand firmly, the photos will be extremely sharp. The past two days, I took NSNA Ngan Lien ( Ha Nam ) to the Suoi Vang Pink Grass Hill (the most beautiful in Da Lat) at 4am (from Bao Dai Palace) to the Suoi Vang Pink Grass Hill (the most beautiful in Da Lat), just in time for dawn. We took pictures like a bullet, afraid that the sun would rise high in the snowy white hill, the fog would melt, and disappear. When the sun rose (about 2 poles), I saw many colorful tents of "backpackers" from Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho... sleeping on the edge of the forest next to the Pink Grass Hill, competing to take "selfies" to find beautiful photos to post on "Facebook" to show off to friends. Then, hundreds of young men, women and dozens of brides and grooms competed to take pictures with the Pink Grass Hill. It was so lively, bustling and extremely exciting. I often get lucky when hunting for photos in Da Lat. The past few days were the same, I chose the most beautiful patch of Pink Grass, stood and waited... And, sure enough, a while later I met "A fairy descending to earth". These are young and beautiful students, artists, models, civil servants... who love Pink Grass, and model for free. Some of them even brought their Alaskan dogs along. They were begging and taking pictures like they were possessed, afraid that the "golden moment" would slip away. In addition to Suoi Vang, around Lang Biang Mountain, Pink Grass also grows abundantly in Trai Mat, Thai Phien, Da Sar, Bidiop-Nui Ba National Park... I met K'Than (probably a descendant of K'Suong) who works as a "hoe" for Pink Grass into blocks, selling them to all kinds of people. Seeing the value of Pink Grass, Lac Duong District (to be merged into Da Lat City according to the recently announced plan) has organized the "Lang Biang Pink Grass Festival" 6 times with many attractive activities (once every 2 years) such as: Saddleless Horse Racing Festival, Lang Biang Food and Wine Festival, Online Photo Contest "Pink Grass Gives Love"... in response to Da Lat Flower Festival.
