On July 7, through his social network Truth Social, US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tax on imports from Japan and South Korea, citing the persistent trade imbalance with Washington's two important allies in Asia.

In two nearly identical letters to the leaders of Japan and South Korea, Mr. Trump said the tariffs would take effect on August 1 because their trade relationship with Washington “is unfortunately far from reciprocal.”

Mr Trump has talked about ending trade negotiations and sent letters to countries informing them of the tariffs.

Last weekend, the US President told reporters that he "signed a number of letters and they will be sent out on July 8, maybe 12 of them."

Washington has announced it will impose new tariffs on imported goods from trading partners if a deal is not reached before the July 9 deadline.

According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the new tariffs could take effect from August 1.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos and Myanmar.

Mr. Trump posted a letter on the Truth Social platform to world leaders, stating that the new tax rate will take effect from August 1.

In the letter, he warned that if countries retaliate by increasing import tariffs, the US government will continue to raise the tariffs even higher. The specific tariffs for the above countries are 25% for Malaysia and Kazakhstan, 30% for South Africa, and 40% for Myanmar and Laos./.
