See big, strong, beautifully decorated buffaloes in Ha Nam

The big, strong "lady" buffaloes, wearing colorful "coats", have long become a unique highlight in the Tich Dien Doi Son festival (Duy Tien town, Ha Nam province).

Every year, on the 7th of January, in the fields at the foot of Doi Mountain, the Tich Dien festival takes place with great excitement, reenacting the ancient story of the king plowing the fields. The day before, a contest to decorate buffaloes also took place, attracting many artists and people.

The buffalo painting contest took place on the 6th day of Tet. This year, the contest gathered 20 artists and groups of artists from many provinces and cities. The "selected" buffaloes, healthy and beautiful, became "painting easels" for the artists to freely create.

The evaluation and scoring is not only based on the color and pattern drawn on the buffalo's body, but also needs to highlight the zodiac theme of this year and properly represent the festival spirit.

With different perspectives and expressions, each artist creates a unique work.

Painter Hoang Trung Dung (from Thai Binh ) said: “Participating in the contest, I had to carefully choose paint colors that are friendly to buffalo skin to limit itching and discomfort for the buffalo. While painting, I had to adjust my hand pressure so that the color adhered evenly.”

The artists are meticulous in every stroke.

People in Ha Nam jokingly call these "buffalo girls" because they are carefully cared for and beautifully "made up".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Dong, owner of buffalo number 5, said that the Doi Son Tich Dien festival often chooses female buffaloes to participate because of their gentle and easy-to-control nature. While painting, the buffalo owner will be present to guard the buffalo, ensuring the safety of the artist.

The buffalo decoration painting contest has long been an indispensable part of the Doi Son Tich Dien festival, bringing new colors and a special artistic mark to the festival. The buffaloes that won the painting contest were honored to be selected to participate in the ceremony today (February 4, January 7).
