In Vietnam, volunteering has become an important part of youth activities, especially students. Volunteering not only helps improve social life, but also acts as a bridge to spread strong humanistic values.
The vanguard of the volunteer movement
Hanoi has always been a pioneer in youth volunteer movements across the country. In 2024, the Summer Youth Volunteer campaign with the theme “Shocking – Creative – Safe – Effective” marked a vibrant and extremely successful summer.
The campaign has successfully completed 14/14 set targets, implementing five contents including: Exam Support, Green Summer, Red Flamboyant, Pink Holiday and Green March. In particular, the spirit of "Three Ready" of Hanoi's youth generation continues to be affirmed through impressive numbers and works. Hanoi Youth Union has proactively applied modern technology in managing and coordinating volunteer activities, typically the software tinhnguyenthudo.vr360.com.vn. This platform helps volunteer activities to be organized scientifically , quickly and in accordance with practical needs.
One of the highlights of the campaign is the Exam Support Program, supporting thousands of candidates and their relatives, with the participation of more than 9,000 volunteers at 396 exam sites across the city. The “Green Shirts for Teachers to School” project also brought great success when 290 students volunteered to tutor 410 grade 9 students for free. During the Green Summer campaign, more than 16,000 students participated in building traffic works, repairing houses, and improving the green environment in disadvantaged areas.
Nguyen Hoang Minh, a student at Hanoi National University, shared that this was the first time he had participated in a volunteer campaign in a mountainous province. Witnessing the difficult lives of the people, Minh realized the true meaning of dedicating youth. Each road that students volunteered to repair and each classroom that was renovated contained pride and happiness.
The Red Flamboyant Campaign, with the aim of bringing a meaningful summer to students, has attracted more than 25,800 students to participate. Diverse activities such as popularizing swimming, preventing drowning, supporting summer review, environmental sanitation, and charity fundraising have created a useful playground, while also training life skills for the young generation.
In addition, the Pink Holiday campaign attracted more than 18,000 union members to support people with administrative procedures, disseminate laws and provide legal advice. The Green March campaign left its mark with propaganda activities on sea and island sovereignty , life skills training and the implementation of digital transformation models associated with the Government's Project 06.
Deputy Secretary of the City Youth Union, Chairman of the Hanoi Student Association Nguyen Tien Hung affirmed that many innovative and creative activities with many effective and practical youth projects and tasks have been carried out, creating an impression and spreading widely in society. After the summer campaign, the whole union has carried out 423 youth projects and tasks with a total value of nearly 62 billion VND.
The 2024 Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign has ended with brilliant results, affirming Hanoi's leading position in the volunteer movement. The campaign's imprints will continue to be a source of motivation for volunteer movements to reach out, continuing to write glorious pages of history for Vietnamese youth.

Taking place from May 27 to August 31, this year's Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign deployed more than 57,000 volunteer teams with the participation of nearly 11 million union members and youth (an increase of more than 65% compared to 2023).
The campaign has implemented over 1,800 provincial-level youth projects worth over VND95 billion; 4,944 district-level youth projects worth over VND274 billion and nearly 42,000 grassroots-level youth projects with a total value of nearly VND406 billion.
First Secretary of the Central Youth Union Bui Quang Huy said that the highlight of this year's campaign is the participation in new, difficult, and important tasks of the country such as: the 30-day peak emulation campaign to complete the 500kV power line, circuit 3 from Quang Trach (Quang Binh) to Pho Noi (Hung Yen)... The images and activities of the youth volunteer teams have created emotions and sympathy from the people and have been recognized by society.
Secretary of the Youth Union of the Northeast Power Transmission Company I, Vu Hoang Ha, expressed his pride when receiving the certificate of merit for actively participating and completing the task of supporting the construction of the 500kV line circuit 3 from the National Power Transmission Corporation. For Hoang Ha, this is the most memorable turning point in his work.
In particular, during the State Funeral of the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the image of young volunteers coordinating with the authorities to direct traffic, guide people to park their vehicles, and ensure security and order at the funeral sites regardless of sun or rain left a strong impression on the people. In Hanoi alone, more than 4,000 students registered to volunteer to participate in the contents of the 2-day State Funeral.
During the recent Typhoon Yagi, thousands of students across the country actively participated in activities to support the prevention, control and recovery of consequences. They did not hesitate to face difficulties and dangers, participated in cleaning, collecting garbage, supporting people to evacuate and move to safe places. In particular, many students coordinated with functional forces, organized volunteer teams to support overcoming damage to infrastructure such as: repairing houses, rebuilding roads, helping people stabilize their lives after the storm. The practical actions of students not only demonstrate the spirit of volunteerism but also contribute to spreading the message of love and solidarity in the community.
Duong Van Trung, from Quang Binh, one of 60 students from the University of Science, Hue University, who participated in supporting Hai Phong people to overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi, shared that he could not forget the image of the convoy of trucks carrying relief goods from all over to help his hometown during the storm in 2020. Thanks to that support, the people overcame difficulties. When the North suffered heavy damage from Typhoon Yagi, Trung also wanted to contribute to help like what the North did.
First Secretary of the Central Youth Union Bui Quang Huy emphasized that the Youth Volunteer Campaign affirms the responsibility and determination of young people in contributing their youth and enthusiasm to the country's development.
Volunteering activities bring profound meaning not only in helping the community, but also contribute to developing the spirit of solidarity and sharing between people. The silent contributions of volunteers, who have constantly devoted their youth and enthusiasm for the community to volunteer activities, are a vivid demonstration of the spirit of solidarity and humanity in society. This year's International Volunteer Day (December 5) is a profound reminder of humanity, encouraging each individual, especially young people, to continue spreading love, contributing to society, towards a united and sustainable community.
