Is teaching rich or poor?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên16/11/2023

After many years of working as a ferryman, witnessing each generation of passengers crossing the river, with smiles and joy, tears and sadness, mixed with a bit of pain and shame... but when mentioning the teaching profession, my heart still flutters with unforgettable memories of the teacher-student relationship.

Looking back on my 17-year journey of holding chalk, thinking about the journey of sowing seeds that is not too long but not too short, I remember the time when I first started practicing standing on the podium, arranging everything to prepare a neat lecture. I silently thank the first minutes of living fully for the passion of discovery , exploration and creativity that have forged the foundation for my current career of cultivating people.

The teacher's wealth is strange!

I still remember the question of an 18 year old young person in a university admissions consultation not long ago and laughed with delight. The teaching profession is not poor, but rich. But the wealth of teachers is very strange!

There is a wealth of knowledge and skills that need to be cultivated in students. There are layers of moral lessons that need to be nurtured in young souls...

Countless gifts from the hearts of the "children" of poetry: a card with spelling mistakes, a bouquet of flowers soaked in the rain, two banh tet sticks dangling from the handlebars of a bicycle...

Warm heart with the picture student gave to teacher

These are simple pieces but enough to warm a teacher's heart: a sweet "yes sir", a hug in the middle of a crowded street, a glance of recognition and the burst of joy of watching a student grow up, mature, and steady...

That was when suddenly one day the dreamy 8th grade girl came to the teacher’s desk and gave her a hastily drawn pencil sketch. The short hair beside the laptop was unmistakable. Her heart was filled with joy because of the simple heart of the student with sparkling eyes…

Or suddenly one day, at the end of class, a 6th grader came walking next to her in the hallway, timidly placing some beautiful chibi drawings in her teacher's hands. She laughed and complimented, "So beautiful," then looked closely and was overwhelmed to see her own image in her child's creative drawings. Oh, so much happiness...

No one chooses teaching to be rich.

No one chooses the teaching profession to seek material wealth. No one chooses the teaching profession to daydream about the gratitude from students, parents and society. No one chooses the teaching profession to wait anxiously every year for a day to express gratitude with gifts and envelopes!

So, on this Thanksgiving Day, I hope parents don't keep discussing and arguing about red envelopes or flowers, gifts or cards because those worries are just our calculating thoughts as adults.

Please kindle in the young generation's hearts gratitude to the teachers who work tirelessly every day to teach letters and people...

The teacher suddenly became beautiful through the chibi drawings of her students.

Please cultivate in the eyes, smiles, hearts and minds of children gratitude and understanding of the teachers' hearts through each lesson, encouragement, compliments and even nagging and punishments...

Get your children involved in expressing gratitude by letting them wrap some flowers and write a few lines to their teachers. The flowers may be sloppy, the wishes a little clumsy and awkward, but that’s okay, a gift from the heart is always precious!

Don't put too much emphasis on the material value of each gift or flower because "the gift is better than the way you give it". Let the children give the flowers themselves, from their pretty lips come words of congratulations to the teacher and those sparkling eyes speak in place of many magical words of gratitude connecting simple hearts.
