Debris from Falcon 9 rocket launched in the US suspected to have fallen in Poland

Authorities in Poland are investigating after two strange objects fell into the country, believed to be debris from the Falcon 9 rocket launched in the US on February 1.

Strange object found in Poland

The Polish Space Agency (POLSA) is verifying whether a strange object found near the western city of Poznan is debris from a fallen SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

This cylindrical object about 1.5 meters long appeared on the morning of February 19 (local time) on the premises of a company in Komorniki near Poznan, according to Polish police.

"It cannot be ruled out that the object found near Poznan is from a Falcon 9 rocket, whose flight we monitored. Confirmation of this requires proper examination," POLSA spokeswoman Agnieszka Gapys was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Later on February 19, a second “identical” object was found in the woods in the Wiry village area. The two locations are about 30 km apart.

"Currently, the police are protecting the second object that was found. Once the operations related to the examination of the first object are completed, we will carry out similar operations in the forest," said police spokesman Lukasz Paterski.

POLSA said the rocket weighing about 4 tons that they tracked on the morning of February 19 was part of a SpaceX Starlink Group mission, launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California (USA) on February 1.

The Falcon 9 is a two-stage reusable rocket designed and manufactured by SpaceX to transport people and cargo into Earth orbit.

Polish news agency PAP reported on the morning of February 19 that streaks of light appeared in the sky, visible from some areas in Poland.

While there have been no reported cases of debris from a Falcon 9 rocket falling to Earth causing injury, billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX has improved its de-orbit procedures following a 2021 incident in Washington state, where a 1.5-meter-long cylindrical object from the rocket fell into a field.
