Sitting in front of the computer for long periods of time, sleeping or exercising in the wrong posture, or carrying heavy objects incorrectly... can all cause pain in the neck and shoulders that spreads to the arms, affecting daily activities.

Recurrent pain, causing difficulty driving and typing

Ms. Thuong, (31 years old, office worker in Ho Chi Minh City) often sits at the computer for more than 10 hours a day. Recently, she felt pain in her neck and shoulders, numbness spreading down to her arms, making even typing on the keyboard or driving a motorbike more difficult.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Luong - Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine - said that neck - shoulder - arm syndrome is a common disease, causing pain and fatigue in the neck, shoulders and arms. Discomfort in this area can lead to challenges and disruptions in daily activities.

This syndrome is common in adults, but children can also get it, especially in some cases such as children sitting in the wrong posture, children with little exercise, obesity, injuries due to accidents, sports ; children with congenital spinal diseases or infections.

The symptoms of cervical shoulder-arm syndrome are not severe and can be overcome or tolerated. However, most patients will experience constant pain, affecting their quality of life.

In addition, due to reduced blood circulation to the brain, it can cause frequent fatigue, dizziness, and even depression. Some people will experience numbness, fatigue, and reduced sensation in their hands, which can affect their ability to grip or work, especially with delicate movements.

The most serious consequence of this syndrome is cervical spinal cord syndrome, causing weakness and paralysis of the limbs. Therefore, early diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and exercise to improve the quality of life, daily activities and work, prevent complications and improve recovery efficiency.

Must follow doctor's instructions

Talking about the causes of neck-shoulder-arm syndrome, Dr. Luong said the main causes include mechanical factors, pathology and other factors.

Mechanical causes are often due to sitting at the computer incorrectly, bending or sleeping incorrectly; occupational factors that require sitting or standing for long periods of time; sitting in front of a fan or air conditioner for too long, bathing at night, or being exposed to rain or sun;

Overtraining or incorrect posture; soft tissue injuries, neck injuries due to sudden movements; improperly carrying heavy objects causing muscle tension, pain and stiffness...

As for pathological causes, it can be a sign of underlying medical conditions, including cervical spondylosis, cervical disc herniation, spinal calcification, shoulder bursitis, shoulder and thoracic joint disorders, stable angina, cancer, autoimmune diseases.

If you are experiencing the pain and discomfort of cervical spondylosis, it is essential to seek medical advice to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

To support effective treatment, patients need to follow the doctor's instructions, avoid twisting or straining the neck too much, change positions regularly, and practice gentle neck exercises.

At the same time, you should supplement nutrients that are good for bones and joints (calcium, omega-3, vitamins C, D, E, B group, glucosamine, chondroitin), limit greasy foods, alcohol, tobacco and stimulants.

Measures to relieve pain from neck - shoulder - arm syndrome at home can be applied

- Cold therapy: Apply a cold gel pack or ice wrapped in a soft towel to the affected area for the first 3 days after the pain begins, to reduce swelling and stiffness. Apply this therapy for up to 20 minutes at a time, 5 times a day.

- Heat therapy and massage: After the initial cold therapy phase, applying warm compresses can improve blood circulation and relax muscles. Gentle massage can also help relieve discomfort.
