Visiting the highland communes and villages of Van Yen district, Yen Bai province today, the flat, clean concrete and asphalt roads, the high-rise buildings next to each other along both sides of the inter-commune and inter-district roads have been and are forming a future urban area, spacious and fully equipped welfare facilities are springing up... Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, a member of the Elderly Association of Dai Phat Commune, excitedly shared: “In the past, our people's lives were very difficult. We worked hard all year round but still did not have enough to eat. Hunger and poverty were always persistent. Thanks to the new rural development program, people were trained to transfer scientific and technical advances in cultivation and animal husbandry, eliminating traditional agricultural thinking and switching to organic cinnamon production, high technology, meeting VietGAP standards, bringing in a significant source of income. Moreover, the infrastructure system such as roads, schools, and stations was also invested in by all levels and sectors to be spacious, clean and beautiful. Since then, the lives of our rural residents have changed, a coat of prosperity and progress.”
In 2024, responding to the movement to build new rural areas, officials and members of the district's Elderly Association actively encouraged their children and families to donate 144,516 square meters of land, contribute 3,000 working days and support hundreds of millions of VND to build rural welfare works. Up to now, all 24/24 communes of the district have met the new rural standards, of which 5 communes have met the advanced new rural standards. In January 2025, officials, party members, members of the district's Elderly Association and people of Van Yen were happy and honored to receive the Certificate of recognition that the district met the new rural standards.

In addition to donating land and expanding roads, the elderly also launched a movement to clean up village roads and alleys, plant and take care of flower and ornamental trees in the self-managed road area, contributing to preserving a green, clean and beautiful environment. These practical actions not only beautify the landscape and appearance of the locality but also raise awareness and change people's behavior in environmental protection.
Coming to Chau Que Ha commune, everyone can easily see the appearance of the new rural area everywhere. “People's lives are getting better and better. If before there was no new rural area, the environmental problem was very difficult. But since the implementation of the new rural area construction program, people are very conscious of protecting the environment, not arbitrarily dumping household waste into canals but bringing it to the collection point in a very civilized manner. In addition, there is also electricity on all the village roads, making it convenient for people to travel at night and preventing petty theft,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, a member of the Elderly Association of Chau Que Ha commune.

Not only are they exemplary in implementing emulation movements, the district's elderly members are also active and prestigious factors in the locality, and are dedicated to the work of the Association in participating in building a clean and strong Party and government. Many elderly take on positions such as: Party cell secretary, residential group leader, village and hamlet chief, and part-time police officer, participating in security teams, crime prevention, and social evils. At the same time, they actively contribute ideas in meetings with voters, contributing to handling problems and limitations at the grassroots level.
Responding to the campaign "All people unite to build a cultural life in residential areas", the elderly set an example in participating in building and implementing conventions, village covenants, and cultural lifestyles in weddings, funerals, and festivals; every year, 100% of elderly families achieve the title of "Cultural Family"... With practical and specific actions, the cadres and members of the elderly association have been contributing to changing the face of the countryside, building the villages in Van Yen into livable countryside.
