The 2-0 victory of the Vietnamese team over the Philippines in the opening match of the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup received much praise from fans in Southeast Asia.

"A great victory for Vietnam. Congratulations guys. Keep going and keep going," Myanmar fan Brentton Barnett congratulated Vietnam on their victory over the Philippines on the AFC Asian Cup page.
Despite having to play away and being under a lot of pressure at home at Rizal Memorial Stadium in the Philippines on the evening of November 16, coach Philippe Troussier and his team still scored an early goal in the 16th minute of the match after striker Van Toan scored.
The score of 1-0 remained until the end of the first half when the Vietnamese team's defense played tightly and was very focused in this match.
The Vietnamese team continued to be under pressure in the second half, but substitute striker Nguyen Dinh Bac sealed a 2-0 victory for the away team with a shot from outside the box in the 90+5 minute of injury time.
The victory of the Vietnamese team received much praise from Southeast Asian fans, especially when coach Philippe Troussier and his team, along with the Malaysian team, were the two Southeast Asian teams to win in the opening match of the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
Accordingly, highly rated teams in Southeast Asia such as Thailand and Indonesia both failed in the opening match of the tournament (Thailand lost to China 1-2, Indonesia lost to Iraq 1-5).
Meanwhile, the Malaysian team caused a big surprise when they let Kyrgyzstan lead 3-1 but still came back to win 4-3.
"The Vietnamese team deserves to be the number one team in Southeast Asia. They had a very good start with a convincing victory over the Philippines, while teams like Thailand and Indonesia have all lost," Malaysian fans praised the Vietnamese team.
"Congratulations to the Vietnam team, keep up the good form and continue to do well in the next match," said a Singaporean fan.
Notably, also on the AFC Asian Cup page, many Iraqi fans sent their congratulations to the Vietnamese team and looked forward to the match between the two teams on November 21.
"Excellent performance from the Vietnam team. We will meet you in the next match and we will win against you on your land, but we will always be brothers and friends," an Iraqi fan affirmed.
