Completely eliminating starch and increasing meat protein consumption to lose weight and maintain weight is a mistake, it will be counterproductive, causing muscle loss and kidney failure.
Control your sugar intake but don't skip rice
"Completely eliminating starch and increasing meat protein consumption to lose weight and maintain weight leads to an unbalanced diet. When the diet lacks carbohydrates, the body will have to convert glycogen stored in the liver and muscles or convert protein into glucose," said Dr. Bui Mai Huong (National Institute of Nutrition) at a seminar on the trend of using foods and drinks with reduced sugar, held in Nghe An today, December 10.
Dr. Bui Mai Huong notes the link between excessive sugar consumption and not eating rice and health risks.
According to Dr. Huong, in daily nutrition, carbohydrates should not be separated because the body needs to be provided with adequate and balanced proportions of the three energy-producing pillars: fat, protein, and carbohydrates.
"Eliminating carbohydrates causes an energy imbalance, forcing the body to convert from stored protein, causing muscle loss. If too much protein is consumed, it can overload kidney function and lead to acute kidney failure," Dr. Huong noted.
Secrets to reducing sugar in food
Dr. Bui Mai Huong also said that sugar is part of the diet, but it needs to be used reasonably, according to recommendations. Because excessive sugar use is related to 45 diseases (dental; diabetes; obesity; complications of hyperglycemic coma; heart disease, joint problems, high blood pressure...).
Nutrition Institute experts say that products with high sugar content, but "hidden" sweetness, are easy to consume too much, such as: milk tea (1 cup has about 40 - 50 mg of sugar/day, reaching the recommended level of need). Or dipping sauces (there is a type of fish sauce used to dip snails, dipping spring rolls, which has at least 20% of its volume as sugar; some types of dipping sauces have sugar content of 40% of their volume). Some types of sauces use condensed milk with high sugar content, with 50 - 55% sugar/100 grams of product. Dishes such as braised meat, sweet and sour ribs; sweet and sour sauce products also contain sugar.
To have healthy sweet products, Dr. Huong said that food manufacturers should reduce the amount of refined sugar and use alternative sweeteners of natural origin such as fruit.
A representative of the TH Nutrition Institute ( TH Group ) said that according to the latest surveys, modern consumers are tending to choose products with reduced added sugar, willing to replace "body-pampering" products with high sweetness with products with reduced sugar, which are beneficial for health.
