The father of the hit "Sad Hymn" passed away

According to information from the family, the author of the hit song "Sad Hymn" - musician Nguyen Vu passed away on the afternoon of September 24 due to a heart attack, at the age of 81.

Musician Nguyen Vu's real name is Nguyen Tuan Khanh, born in 1944 in Hanoi . In 1954, he followed his family to the South, living in Da Lat (Lam Dong). From a young age, he studied music theory and was exposed to many musical instruments such as guitar, harmonica, and piano. At the age of 12, he won first prize in a children's solo singing competition organized by Da Lat Radio Station.

The most famous song of musician Nguyen Vu is "Sad Hymn", composed by the musician in 1972. The first singer to perform the song was musician Thai Chau, after that many singers performed this song in their own style.

Musician Nguyen Vu is a straightforward person. He has repeatedly spoken out against many singers who sang his songs incorrectly, causing the "Sad Hymn" to lose some of the meaning he wanted to convey.

Musician Nguyen Vu once told about the birth of the song "Sad Hymn": "Christmas is often understood as a joyful season, but in 1972, when a publisher asked me to compose a song for Christmas, I thought for a long time about how to write it. When I came home and listened to the song "Silent Night", I suddenly remembered a memory from when I was a 14-year-old boy. At that time, my house in Da Lat was located next to the slope leading to Con Ga Church. Every time the church bell rang, I saw the figure of a very pretty girl going to mass past my house.

I followed her silently for many times until one day, on Christmas Day. It was drizzling so we both happened to be hiding under the porch. I was suddenly moved when I heard her humming along to "The Holy Night" with a pretty good voice.

So, listening to this song again, old memories suddenly flooded back to me and the melodies just flowed out. In just under two hours, I finished the song and when I picked up the guitar to play it again, I felt moved. Singer Thai Chau was the first person to sing this song and soon after, it became the "hottest" song of that year's Christmas season.

Over the past 35 years, especially in recent years, when music centers have produced Christmas music programs, "Sad Carol" has always been a favorite of listeners.

"That's something I didn't expect either. In fact, everyone in life goes through a period of dreamy love, and often sad memories are always deeply engraved and easily soften people's hearts when recalled. Perhaps my "Sad Hymn" has partly done that?" - musician Nguyen Vu once confided.

Regarding vocals, musician Nguyen Vu likes singers with strong voices such as Elvis Phuong and Thai Chau. He does not like singers with "effeminate" voices to perform his songs because his music is written in a Western style.
