Japan: New Prime Minister to be elected on October 1

According to Kyodo News Agency, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmaker in charge of parliamentary affairs in Japan, Mr. Yasukazu Hamada, said that the country's National Assembly will elect a new prime minister on October 1, after the party leadership election on September 27.

The LDP holds a majority of seats in the Diet, so the winner of the internal party election essentially becomes prime minister.

Polls show that there are three leading candidates among nine candidates to succeed Mr. Fumio Kishida as head of the LDP. They are female economic security minister Sanae Takaichi, 63; former LDP Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba, 67; and Mr. Shinjiro Koizumi, 43, son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Current Prime Minister Kishida, 67, announced last month that he would resign.

If elected, Mr. Koizumi would be Japan's youngest-ever prime minister, while Ms. Takaichi, if elected, would be the country's first female leader.
